I recently purchased this 2018 Expedition and am curious if this sound that lasts for a second or two when starting is normal or potentially the cam-phaser issue I've heard so much about?

We’ve got the exact thing going on now, and it’s at the shop. Of course, the sound has yet to make an appearance for the techs.

Absolutely! Good old 10speed cam phasers failing. Will probably be in shop 2 weeks if it’s anything like my dealership.

I was just told by my dealer the kits to repair this are backordered nationwide. Couldn't even get an appointment for mine to be checked until the 8th, so maybe they'll be in stock by then, but didn't sound good.

So ours finally made the noise for the dealer today, so they got the confirmation they needed. However as 5280 said above, the parts are on BO. They’ll call us when they get them in.

99.9% sure that is cam phaser/VCT related. Just had my 2018 in for repair for the same thing. Both timing chains, both cam phasers, and VCT's were replaced. Check out my "RU Kidding Me" thread if you want to see the related TSB my work was performed too.

did you take her in to get fix?

I just bought a 2019 Expedition Platinum and i am hearing that same sound. I am setting up an appointment with Ford. I had taken her in to Ford and one of their Service Manager told me that is a known issue. They stated that the fix that Ford put out is not working and to wait till a new fix is put out by Ford. He also stated that the issue is nothing to be concern about since it does not lead to any long term issues. Not sure what to believe at this point. I really love the vehicle and would like it fix.

Yeah guys are having them replaced and 1000 miles later it’s coming right back.

I haven't yet. I had been working on some upgrades on my other vehicle so I wanted to get those done before taking the Expy in. At this point I have low expectations, but I'll report back when I get around to taking it in.

I've got the same sound and my dealer said it was "too quickly silenced after staring to diagnose"...and they had it for 3 days so they did start it cold multiple times. Car had 13,500 miles on it at the time. Honestly, if the problem is going to keep coming back I am not sure I am inclined to have the top end of the engine torn apart just for kicks. When it gets bad enough that it throws some chunks down into the valvetrain it'll definitely be Ford's issue.

Add another one to the list. 2018 Max Lmtd w/ 4wd (33k miles). Had Code P0022 and dealer replaced solenoids two weeks ago. Code reappears so I brought it back in. They now have the parts ordered to fix sticking cam phasers with an estimated delivery of 1 month out. Mechanic and service manager have stated that there is no problem driving it until then. I'll be testing their theory on a hunting trip to CO over the next two weeks. Has anyone had any tangible impact or performance issues with this problem while waiting for it to be fixed?

Sublime, that is 100% the cam phaser problem.
See my comments and video on the “cold start rattle” thread.

The good news is you aren’t hurting the vehicle by continuing to drive it—all of the moving parts get replaced with the TSB.
Yes, it sounds scary. But it isn’t going to fly apart and throw loose parts around inside the front cover, or impact the actual valve train.

Mine was done 10,000 miles ago and still is completely tight and silent on cold starts.
