I just bought a 2004 Explorer 2 weeks ago. Up until last night there were no problems. When I opened the door none of the convenience/dome lights came on like they usually do. When I turned on the car the door ajar light came on. I checked all of the doors including the tailgate and the tailgate window and the light stayed on. The automatic headlights also did not turn on even though it was dark out. The headlights did turn on when I switched them to manual. The convenience/dome lights do turn on manually. When I turned off the car the convenience/dome lights turned on but then turned off like they usually do. When I removed the key and opened the door the radio stayed on instead of turning off when the door was opened. The convenience/dome lights also did not turn on when I opened the door. I've been researching this problem and have a couple possibilities. I have read about faulty door sensors/dirty latches, VSM's, GEM's, or a corroded violet/purple wire under the rear driver side sill plate. People who have problems with the last three possibilities tend to have more problems than I am currently having and my power locks and windows work. I don't understand why the automatic headlights would not be working if its just a door sensor/dirty latch. I am going to try spraying WD-40 into the latches later today but am afraid it could be the VSM or GEM because the radio and automatic headlights aren't working correctly. I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts.

I would start by checking fuses and relays I don't have prints for a 2004 Explorer so I really cant see what all is in the circuits. Check your owners manual and if you don't have one you can get one on line at ford owners go over the fuse and relay layout in the manual
