I want to use a relay controlled by some kind of circuit that is alive after starting, to send lighting current. I could basically leave the light switch on always, but they would go out when the ignition is switched off.

Has anyone tried this or have suitable schematics that I could figure this out?

AWD, let me get back from vacation and I bet we can get your up and running in no time. You might be surprised as to how simple this modification may be.

Great. I figured it was a simple mod.

Where is vacation at? What is a vacation? Can I come?

IIRC the F150 has a harness behind the one of the headlights for DRL. I think you just plug in a relay. The Expy might be different, but maybe just in a different spot. If you can find a wiring diagram for the lights it might be in there.

AWD, I am up near you in Toledo. I will be back in a few days and give you step by step of what you need to do to accomplish what you are after.

AWD, you are going to need to pull out the headlight switch and you will need to cut 3 wires. You will be cutting the tan/white striped wire, dark blue/orange striped wire, and the dark blue/white striped wire. You will need 3 separate relays unless you can find a relay capable of 15 amps per switch. From there (assuming a separate relay for each wire), you will wire the cut wire to terminals 30 and 87 of the relay. Then you will need to find a switchable power source (black/pink wire on the back of the radio is an easy one to get at and has some extra room on it) and wire that to terminal 85 and then wire terminal 86 to chassis ground.

This is going to cause all of your lights to come on as if you had flipped the headlight switch to the ON position. If you are wanting only the headlights to come on, then that is a slightly different story and I would need to tell you how to do that.

Thanks Thermo. That is exactly what info I need. I'll want all lights on day or night and with the relays powered by the radio circuit, they will be activated when the ignition is on...and as a bonus, the light switch will still function as normal.

Take another vacation. You deserve it. Thanks again.

It looks like I can get 3 sockets & 4 relays from parts express for $16. Having one spare on board.

What other current source might work that is not hot while cranking the starter? Worst case is that I could add another relay that gets it's power from the same circuit that triggers the starter relay on the firewall. The added relay could cut the power to the lighting relays only when the starter cranks. That's what I did on my bike.

AWD, look on the back of the A/C panel (both manual and the EATC module), look for a light blue/pink wire. This should have power to it only when the truck is in run. So, even if you turn the key to the ACC position, the lights will remain off. that would be my second choice.
