Hi, so I drove my 99 eddie bauer expedition when it didn't have any oil. The engine seized, but I put more oil into it and it started up. I drove right home and it drives no differently than it ever has. There is now a slight clicking when I rev the engine. Sort of like a card in bicycle spokes. It is minor but noticeable. Any thoughts?

I know how stupid this was.

Thanks.

Well you can look at it this way, you don't have to worry about tight clearances at all. The ticking is coming from the extra clearance at one or more of the bearings or cam followers.

Damage depends on how long it ran without oil.

You are lucky if the cylinder walls didn't score.

Why would you even consider running without oil, was alcohol involved?

Keep us posted. I suspect that you will have engine problems, but who knows how long it will go before you do. I would drain the oil and see if you have any bearing material suspended in the oil. Don't beat yourself up, you aren't the first person this has happened to. The oil light in the dash should have come on.

Here's something you can do as well. There are labs you can send oil samples to that will advise what they see which includes metal content and what actions you should take. Look online, find a lab, follow their instructions. Do the same for oil and coolant as both touch different parts of your engine.

If your oil ever shows milky in any way, you very well may have a crack in the block allowing coolant to infiltrate the oil.

Be very careful driving that thing. Even with it seemingly running okay, you put yourself in the position of putting a rod through your block. To truly be safe, I would take it to a reputable mechanic and ask them to look it over. They may even have a lab they use to send oil to and / or can change your oil filter, slice open the old one and see if there is any metal in there.

Like the rest here, I too want to know how you came to be without oil. What on earth did you do?
