I changed my plugs at 40,000 miles because I read that the recommended gap changed to .28. The gaps on the plugs were all over the place at that time.

Now at 90,000 miles I changed them again. Gaps were .28 when I put them in. Autolite Iridium plugs. I checked the gaps today after taking them out (in ascending order of gap, not in order of cylinder):

.31
.35
.35
.38
.38
.41

These Ecoboosts eat plugs. Of course I tow a horse trailer, probably 5-7,000 of the last 50,000 miles, so your mileage may vary.

Why did you use Autolite spark plugs instead of OEM Motorcraft?

I have a 2018 which is the Gen 2 engine and just did them today at 65K (we just got the truck and tow hitch looks to have never been used). Looks like even the Gen 2's should have them done at about the same mileage your seeing when towing. The gaps on the old ones I removed were between 0.032 - 34. New plugs from dealer were still NGK Iridium under Ford part number SP594 and were pre gapped at 0.030. I left them at that after checking all 6 and it runs great. I plan to change them in another 40K and not brave enough to ever go 65K on a turbocharged engine no matter what type car it is.

I was formerly a GSM at a Ford dealership here in Canada.

I have personally owned four Ecoboosts from F150’s to the new Raptor.

Three undeniable truths about these engines;

1) use the proper weight of oil according to the temperature outside and compare that to the severe duty section & fluids area of the owners manual.

2) These engines love sea level so much more than higher altitudes, if you’re in a higher altitude prepare for substantially less fuel economy than others report.

3) These engines require a plug change every 30,000 miles. They eat plugs. Yes even the iridium ones. Change your plugs. What’s that? Yes change them.

I don’t come on here much but I’d answer any questions you have.
