Hi, I'm new here and I bought my '99 Expedition for $1200 good deal right?? I thought so as well. Any how, it had a tapping noise when I bought it. I thought it was a lifter so I sent it in to get it worked on. Turned out it was just a stripped spark plug.
Now....the oil gauge is dropping from normal to low and the oil light comes on. Along with that comes the knocking sound. Some people have said it's a head, while others have said it's the spark plugs. As far as the oil gauge, hopefully it's just the sensor. BTW, it has 250,000 miles on her. Can any one help me figure this out...Please

Hi Sapozilla,
at 250k it could be a number of things, maybe even warn out. I don't know if you are familiar with these engines but they have some inherent problems. Oil pump failure is one of them. I am not as familiar with this 1st gen engine as the next generation and their oil pressure gauges are just fancy idiot lights, basically a gauge that looks like one, so can't be trusted. You might start by putting a pressure tester on the oil pressure sending unit port and seeing what you have. As well depending on what this is showing could be debris in the oil pan, a bigger project then checking the oil pressure but the oil pump could be sucking up debris from a broken timing chain assembly, thats also fairly common. And at 250k your crank bearings could be clapped out so no oil control. And the engine could be gummed up inside because of the lack of maintenance which also inhibits oil control
So you will need to do a little research as low oil pressure could be a number of things.. But you are not alone, this is probably one of the most posted problems I see on the site.

Well now you know why you got it for $1200.00. Me and a partner have a 98 Eddie Bauer with 150k for $3400.00, why? Because it works. As Snaggy said, hook up a known good oil pressure gauge, see if you've got oil pressure. How mechanical are you? If your paying shops for this, you might want to see if you can find another soul like you, that likes a challenge. Cherry shape, with your mileage these Suv's are only $2500.00. A used engine and labor is going to be that much. Keep posted what you find/do.
