I have a 2010 Ford Expedition Limited, during cold starts I have excessive crank. When she finally starts I smell fuel at the exhaust. It runs fine once it starts, and also does not do it if the truck is already warm. Any ideas?

Often cold, long-cranks are caused by a defective fuel pressure regulator, which causes the fuel pressure to bleed-down over time.

Once the engine is running, the fuel pressure returns. If you turn off the engine and restart while it is warm, the fuel line pressure is still present and ensures a quick start.

One way to test for a defective fuel pressure regulator (with a cold engine, parked overnight) is to turn the key to run (not start) for two seconds, turn off the key - then turn on the key again for two seconds, and turn off the key. They turn the key to run and see if the engine starts without excessive cranking.

If the engine starts quickly, you’ve found your problem. Turning the key to “on” twice for two seconds energizes the fuel pump, which primes the fuel line pressure.
