So I was at my exhaust shop and told them I wanted to get my flowmaster 40 louder. I already knew going with stock pipe to begin with it wouldnt be very loud, but I thought I would go see what else I can do to get it louder. The response by them was go with a different muffler, that nothing would make it louder, I asked about changing the pipe size, and he said NO, I asked about rear-cat delete and he told me that was a $25k fine for them to do that. Basically he said I needed to buy another muffler and go a different route.

So I am thinking if I am stuck, I may go with a glasspack, or just cut off my flow and run nothing but pipe? I should have just saved my money in the begining but It was burning a hole in my pocket. I am not looking for performance and I like loud, i ran my last expedition with no muffler and loved it, but now i am worried about my son and the fumes under his side of the truck.

Any suggestions or comments?

I had a 40 series Flow Master on mine. I didn't like it, so I had Flow Master 10 series, much louder and from what I can tell. More performance, I mean loud and had a 12" long 4" tip put on.

Panda,

I have the little stupid chrome looking one they put on it when the muffler was put on. I want to get this one. Small diameter for sure same as pipe.

This is what i want:

Hell I have been reading about the 10 series that sounds what i am looking for, I may try the tip thing also, plus I dig the black tip!

I wouldn't worry too much about the fumes from a straight pipe as long as its piped out the back. The muffler doesn't eliminate any extra fumes, just noise. I deleted my muffler and I love it.

You want loud?

-Aftermarket headers
-O/R Midpipe (no cats)
-Flowmaster 1 chamber dumped right after the muffler

Then you will want to kill yourself if you ever drive on the highway. I ran a similar setup on a 5.0 mustang for a year and I literally had ringing in my ears every time I drove it 2 hours home from where I was. This is the reason I call flowmaster "Dronemaster" and I never recommend them to anyone. Straight through setups like Magnaflow/Dynomax/Borla etc... sound 1000x better and won't make you go deaf or get pulled over every time you go by a cop.

Besides, flows are loud at idle/cruise but the aformentioned brands of straight through mufflers are MUCH louder and throatier when you mash the throttle without rasping or popping like their chambered relatives.

My dad has a 1997 expedition with the 5.4 and he has true dual flowmaster 40s with headers and 2 1/2 inch pipe with 3 inch round tips and that thing shakes the floor when he starts it up. I will be running the same setup on mine because I cant find any better sound then those mufflers. Cherry bomb is to damn loud and magna flow is too quiet. the tips do make a big difference cause I have seen the same setup on another expedition with 1 3/4 round tips it was alot quieter. Personally I like the drone the flowmasters have, they give the sound a truck should have, although they sound good on the 5.4s i know on the 4.6s there not as loud. if you want extremely loud though get cherry bomb extremes those will wake up your neighborhood for sure lol. which 40 series do you have though? are they the american thunder series or the delta flow?

Oh that is more like it, cut that flowmaster off this morning :superhack:...sounds killer, I just need to get a piece of pipe and turndown so the exhaust doesnt swirl around right under the seat area.

bad thing about straight pipe is you loose all your back pressure, and then that kills your fuel mileage too lol. I wish I could remove my cats but we got emmission testing in illinois

you think thats bad? try living in cali. haha but it doesnt really make you loose mpg. what makes you loose it is your ear. you want to hear the exhaust. haha

all I know is when i had straight pipe on my cadillac I lost alot of low end power....but then again I had it dumped right by the front fenders (yea I did some weird shit to that car) lol. it was loud though it shook the floor when I would rev lol. I cut some holes in my expeditions resonator the other day so I can get SOME sound until i get my duals lol :pepper:
