Extended warranty?

Hi All,

Well, I finally retired my 2004 Tahoe with 185,000 miles...and bought a 2014 EL Limited with 80,000 miles. I am impressed with this ride. I bought from a Ford dealer so it has the certified whatever used stuff. I have a 30 day warranty and of course, they offed an extended warranty. 12/12,000 $1395, 24/24,000 $1795, or 36/36,000 $2495

I don't usually bite on these warranties, but I do plan on keeping this EL until we no longer need 2 cars, and I quit my semi retired status as cabinet makers and small contracting jobs. Could be 10 years and 200,000 miles if things go well. I don't want to start a debate like oil and such, but do you folks think they are worth it? I thought I might use my Tahoe $$$ and do the three year if so. I do realized it's basically a crap shoot.

Also offered for $395 was their "Equity Protection Package", where they do a deep cleaning of the undercarriage and seal it with goo. There is a tiny bit of surface rust that I plan on taking care of in the spring...but all in all, it's really clean under there.

The only warranty I would recommend is the premium care warranty offered by Ford. I have mine up to 140,000 miles. The aftermarket warranties are just hassles and they look for every reason to not cover things.

I would jump on the warranty but take a good look at whats covered and what the stipulations are before signing on the dotted line. Make sure it covers major expenses

As for the undercarriage coating I personally would avoid it. I just don't like the idea of something being sealed after it has already formed some rust. If you lock the rust in or even moisture it will just rott faster(ask me how I know). Your best bet would be some type of oil spray like crown. @Muddy Bean had his done and it was even cheaper than the option the dealer gave you.

Check out Ford's warranties online at Lombard Ford. Don't pay your dealer's prices. I bought 4 year 40K miles power train for $1300. Lombard has the best prices and the Ford warranties are honored at every dealership.

The undercoating often just accelerates rust. Sending me the $395 would be better for the car.

Thanks guys...I appreciate the info. I will check on the Ford Premium through my dealer, who is a good friend and would not sell me on something bad. I bought my EL at another dealer (who offered the warranty), after my dealer ran a Carfax for me.
As for the undercoating, I agree 100%. Supposedly, they clean it up, but I'd rather see what's happening and take care of it myself as necessary.
Eddie, how about we split the cost since I am a newbie. Will you take a check for your half??

As others have said, choose the right one, but do get one. My 2015 with 116,000 miles is currently having the drivers turbo, throttle body, and related stuff being replaced as I type this. All under warranty.

$2500 seems pricey for a 3 year warranty. Another way to evaluate this is: Do you think there is at least a 50% chance of having $5k worth of covered repairs in the next 3 years (50% of $5k = $2500 = the cost of the warranty)... or choose your own numbers/scenarios. If not, then just take the chance of having to pay out of pocket for any otherwise-covered repairs.

e.g. If you only foresee a 20% chance of having $5k worth of repairs in the next 3 years, then the value of the warranty is about $1k (20% of $5k). Or... if you foresee a 50% chance of only needing $2500 in repairs, then the warranty's value is about $1,250 (50% of $2500).

Remember to take deductibles into account.

It may make more sense to "bear the financial risk" of having to pay out of pocket for major repairs, since you'll already have a $2500 head start (the $$ you didn't pay for the warranty).

I just purchased a used 2017 XLT as well. My first Ford ever and came from a Chevy Tahoe Hybrid with 143k on the clock.


I searched the web, here and came up with Flood Ford ESP and Ziegler as the top 2. Both appear to be Ford direct ESP warranties.

Flood Ford was a bit cheaper (for my situation) at 7 year 125k miles with a $200 deductible for $1910. This is for premium care or the top level warranty.

Just some numbers for comparison, this transaction was all online and easy as well.

Rye...Is yours considered a new vehicle? I went to flood and they wouldn't do anything over 41,000 miles and said to check with my local dealer for info.
My dealer was a tiny bit cheaper, 36/36000 for $2465 for the "premium". They also offered a 48/36000 for $1885 for the "extra care" warranty. I won't do that kind of mileage so maybe the 48/36000 would be best for me. I still have to look at what is included (or not) from one to the other. Still a crap shoot...

My dealer also said I'd have a $100 deductible per visit He said they would lump several warranty issues into the same ded. if they were all fixed at the same visit. I told him since I have towing, I might as well wait till my EL is completely dead and tow it in...with a Franklin taped to the dash...

I bought that Ford warranty from Lombard on line with 97,000 on the clock.

Mine had 46k and I was able to get the 5yr 100k Ford premium plan. $100 deductible.

FWIW, I had ~$15K worth of warranty repairs done on my truck when I bought it in 2015 as a CPO. I paid $800 for the CPO, which practically paid for itself when it was determined (after the paperwork was signed) that the truck needed all new tires to be certified. I got about 24K miles for that price. I would definitely consider a warranty of some kind, but take a good look at what's covered and what's not. Most of my repairs were the Limited frills.

on my last super duty i bought one online from a ford dealer in birmingham ala for nearly 1/3 rd less than dealer wanted for the ford warranty.
imo the ford warranty is no nonsense and usually is best way to go.

Oh there's plenty of nonsense. It's better than the 3rd party warranties imho though. Imagine my mom's surprise when she took the extended warranty she purchased from her Ford dealer (at the same time she bought her new car) to that dealer for repairs and they said: "Oh, we don't accept that warranty here." lol

I was at 40,638 miles when I purchased mine. I do recall Ziegler’s site mentioning 41k on it. Sorry, I missed the part where you were over 41k.
