Got rid of it today! The factory intake is over 4" where it goes into the air filter but only 2.25" where it comes through the fender well. I replaced it with a piece of 4" thin wall Sewer pipe, a 4" to 3" adapter and a piece of 3" through the fender well. The Ex seems to breathe a lot easier now and there is no noticeable difference in noise!

The air filter and Maf are in the center section on the 3V trucks.

Man I would just cut the hole out bigger for the full size pipe into the fender on that one....LOL

Good idea. Now paint it to match!

And x2 to Matt's point. But still an improvement, nonetheless...

Major byach to cut that out to 4". It's not only the inner fender but a center section too. I have hole saws big enough but i am not sure how i would hold em!!!

you could cut a piece of plywood to fit in the old hole then let the pilot bit drill into that first......

I did the intake mod on my 2000 5.4l yesterday. I used 3" pvc pipe and removed the snorkel. Used a table saw to thin the pipe OD out to fit through the fender hole. The old snorkel OD fits inside the ID of the pipe that I used. It was a little tough getting the airbox back into place. I wonder if that's why they factory necked it down so much, to allow ease of assembly. The pipe is attached to the airbox with a 3" to 3" fernco.

Pretty easy but messy thinning the pipe out. Looks clean too. You can't see the white PVC, just the fernco. If you search the web I think it is "gotts intake mod" or something on another site. I can now see out into the fender looking through the box. I can fit my whole hand out into the fender. Much bigger opening now.
