I'm a bit miffed with myself for not having noticed that there's a gaping opening in the intake ductwork- the intake resonator is missing.
Heaven only knows how long it's been gone. The thing must have been missing when we got the car fourteen months and 8000 miles ago.
Since it's upstream of the filter I doubt there's been any much harm, but it can't be helpful for filter life, either.
I found one on Ebay and it's inbound.

I don’t think that has an effect on filter life. The engine needs a specific amount of air, plus it is filtered air even with that part missing. Only thing is the intake is not getting as much colder air. It’s so negligent, you don’t even notice a change in gas mileage.

No harm. I take mine out during the winter to force the engine to draw warmer air while driving around town.

During the winter I cover the upper grille and force it to draw air from the under the hood. The air isn't warmer on the interstate, just too much airflow, but it helps a bit with fuel economy around town to get warmer intake air when it's below 30 degrees or below. It also gets to operating temp quicker so my wife can heat sooner. Covering the grille helps quite a bit ~1. What I found funny was that the year after I started doing this Ford started adding active louvres behind the grille to some of their vehicles. I gave up after about a year of trying to design manually operated louvres and just went with coroplast reinforced with music wire.

Thanks for your explanation.
