In the process of trying to remove the negative (-) cable from the battery I came across the problem of not being able to remove the nut because of the clip(?) above preventing me from putting the wrench around the nut. The clip on the positive (+) cable doesn't stop me from getting the wrench around it to remove it. Any help towards a solution would be appreciated.

Have you tried a 6-point socket, or bending the clips to gain clearance to the bolt head?

If I were here, you would know it !
Try a Dremel tool or a hacksaw to remove the offending part of the clip, unless you wanna be like 007 & zap it with a laser, hahahaha :D

I assume that bolt screws into a threaded hole on the other side of the clamp? If so, those two small tabs probably serve to keep the bolt from backing out. You could use a flathead screwdriver to bend the tabs upward enough to get a socket onto the bolt and then tap them back down when you're done. If they happen to break, some medium strength threadlocker would work also.
