After refueling my 2017 expedition today, there was a strong smell of gasoline in the cab of the vehicle. My wife said it also happened the last time she refueled. I took it to the nearest Ford dealer, one and a half hours away. It still smelled strongly of gasoline. After they checked everything over, the technician showed me a schematic and explained that there is an over pressure relief valve on the fuel system located inside the engine compartment. His remedy was to use the recycle air button on the heater until the gas smell goes away. Has anyone else had this problem or have a suggestion of what can be done?

Did you smell the driver side carpet or your shoe?

Before you run off and freak out over a gasoline smell you first noticed at a gas station, consider the possibility that you stepped in a puddle of gas on the ground (a small drop of gasoline can stink like hell for a long time) and got it on your carpet. It can last for days.

Imagine....smelling gas at a gas station.

Do you fill up the tank more after the click? So many people try to squeeze more into the tank. You may have actually forced gas into the evap system. I didn't know until I watched this. Now once it clicks I'm done filling. Sorry for all the Scotty Kilmer posts in different topics. He can explain things better than I and I have picked up a lot of information from this old car mechanic lol

I have filled cars until it was puddling above the flapper in the neck and never a problem or smell. Anything is possible.

Thanks, but I learned long ago to stop filling when the nozzle shuts off. This is my wife's car and I have a hard time getting her to understand not to run the gas tank so low. The tank being that empty may have caused an overpressure in the fuel system that blead off at the valve under the hood.

I also highly doubt that.
A tank will create more pressure when it is more empty than when it is half full or more but compared to being almost bone dry or three or four gallons in it makes very little difference. It will still build up the same amount of vapor pressure but in reality it won't build up any pressure at all because the system is open and constantly bleeds It off. Temp has an even greater affect on the vapor gassing it does.
While it is possible to get an overload of fumes going to wherever the charcoal canister or vapor canister is in the car which is more than likely under the hood or front area, I have also seen cars with it more underneath the car or any of the middle. It might be more likely if the tank was quite low and all the fuel sloshing around but this should clear up in a matter of minutes and not linger.

I have found to fill on the slower ? or squeeze till almost full then slow down the fill. You can pump in faster than the orifice can vent.

I have fill many cars. I have filled until gas is running down the outside of the car. I have not had gas fumes inside the cars once I drive from the fuel pumps. Even my current Expedition will not put fumes inside when I run gas over or slop the filler tube area "by accident" I get no fumes inside. If fumes escape into the passenger compartment it would a problem I would not take a simple answer for. Fumes cause explosions, don't they?

We had that problem at the motorcycle shop I was at in 2000. Especially on Honda's for some reason. One small 250 rebel had fuel in the charcoal canister. We had to replace the canister. My 2000, I tipytop fill it due to my 10mpg. Never smell fuel or any ill effects. Could be a later edition deal.

I wish the manufacturer would sell me only half the fuel gauge and lower the cost of the vehicle because I never use from halfway to full anyways. Lol

And I'll bet when you get a flat tire, it's only flat on the bottom!

I have noticed that I get the strong smell if I do not turn the key all the way off. If my kids are watching a movie and I only shut the engine down but leave it on aux for the DVD player, I get the same thing.
