I have a 2000 X, which began shifting hard randomly; in some cases to the point I can hear odd noises below me. I notice this happens mainly at light acceleration or light driving. Symptoms don't appear at hard acceleration. Also, randomly the OD would come on, but not flash.

Prior to reading some posts, I've:

Flushed the tranny (fluid seemed good, no flakes)
and replaced the shift lever(cabling was worn at column)
also 1 coil pack has been replaced (nearest right headlight)

The symptoms continue

With light acceleration, mainly between 30-60mph, I experience hard shifting, and hesitation then sudden power.

All local Ford dealers have told me it's the tranny and to wear it out then replace. I'm having trouble accepting that, and hope you guys may have some ideas.

Any ideas/thoughts are appreciated!

The flush was completed by a Ford dealer....if I had to guess, the filter was not changed.

The fuel/plugs have not been checked as I have no idle/firing issues at any other time, only when shifting gears.

I have gathered OBD data via scantool, no trouble codes; all seems welll. I can provide OBD data if needed.

I did some reading and cleaned the TCC solenoid connections, while driving today, I tried to force the issue (light acceleration) it only happened once. Now it's only been a day; I may replace the tcc and see what that does.

From everything I've read here, seems like the issue surrounds the TCC

Thanks for the suggestions.

It may be the solonoid that regulates the line pressure to the trans. If it gets stuck wide open then the high line pressure will make it shift really hard.....
Just my 2 cents,

To everybody else:
Is there a way to get an email notification when a new PM comes in to your inbox?

Matt,

I haven't done the load test, I did do the following.

I removed the TPC, and started cleaning the contacts w/alcohol and a q-tip. For no good reason, I lightly tapped the sensor on the palm of my hand and I'm embarassed to say.....

Water was in it, greasy, dirty water. I've no idea how that got there. I cleaned the engine once, w/ water....two years ago and promised myself I'd never do again.

I left the sensor off for several hours and replaced. The issue has happened only 1-3x since, the gas mileage seems to have improved, acceleration as well.

I plan to replace anyhow ASAP. We are in the process of moving, work etc.....free time is precious.

Hard to believe it may be that simple....I'd like to run over the guys at the Ford dealer :)

I want to thank you again for all the info. Looks like you've definitely helped me fix the issue.

Okay; update....

I bought a new TPC today and realized I had no idea where the hell it actually was.....I still don't know what is was that I removed and cleaned, but I now know it was not the TPC

In attempt to remove the TPC I realized the existing was cracked and the bottom retaining screw bent. (I found this odd as I'd never replaced/removed it etc; as I mentioned I didn't even know where it was) So imagine the pain in the a- to remove. Nearing dark in KY, I had to run to Lowes and get two screws to replace the P.O.S. phillips that were originally installed

Long and short of it; got two hex head bolts to replace screws and all is well; at least it seems, will be on highway tomorrow.

Matt,

-I want to thank you again for all your help!

I took my Expy (99)for the full service offered by Ford at my local dealers. A week later my compressor failed and they replaced it under warranty but I had to play for the relay. The next day I found that now the compressor comes on not only everytime I start it up but very often while driving too. Furthermore the transmission downshifts everytime I ease up on the gas, even at 110 km. Is this normal to downshift at such speeds and I need to push pass the 80km to get into top gear?
Any advice or assistance would be appreciated. All this started when I took it to service. Before that I had no problems of this sort.
