It's not BS.

Those charts are old. That data refers to fluids of more than 20 years ago.

Do a search for bitog and feast... it's the number one source of data and conversation about all things oil, and some knowledgeable fellas atop that.

Today's atf, much akin to today's group 4+ motor oils rarely exhaust/deplete... they contaminate.

Bob is the oil guy are you serious!!!!!! That website is a joke and the laughing stock of automobile related websites

And it is BS. You run around all day with a trans temp in the 250-275* range and get back to us in a couple months and let us know how that trans rebuild you're paying through the nose for is going.

who the eff said anything about all day?

learn to read.... i said the enemy isn't the oil, it's the sluff from clutch material contaminating the oil- and it should be replaced immediately. however, 240 isn't a big deal anymore for short periods of time and as long as it's allowed to circulate and cool before it stops pumping through.

and you speak foul of bitog, and you think THIS place is enlightening? this place has very few knowledgeable people- and many people such as yourself who take opposition as some sort of attack and respond in like. again i say, there are very knowledgeable people on bitog. more than here. are all of them in that class? helz no...

and i pull 12k+ regularly and with a vehicle designed to do so- i've seen spike in trans temp to 230 on grades when t/c isn't locked, and i've been tossing near 1200# of tq through it for more than 130k miles- not a whimper....

the friggin' internal thermostat on the 5r110w doesn't budge until 165*, and on a 6R110 not until friggin' 190... 190!!!

but..... go along thinking you have a grip if it makes you feel better about yourself... knock yourself out.

After adding the 12 v line and a 7 pin in the rear, it took me quite a bit of research to find out that the only other things i was missing from a HD tow package were a heavy duty radiator and heavy duty transmission cooler. I had them installed by my local mechanic. Parts werent terrible, but labor is where he got me. He said ford makes things hard to get to. I probably could have researched of the stuff were things i could do, but it coat me about $800 total. I figured to raise my tow capacity from 6000 lbs to about 8900 or 9000 (whatever it is) it was worth paying the money and just getting it done. We picked up a 24' travel trailer. Hauled it from utah to california to camp on the beach for a week. Got back last week. Temps coming back were hundred and teens. There are some really steep climbs coming back...always 10-15 vehicles on the side that have overheated, despite signs warning to turn off a/c and such. We climbed those with a/c blasting just fine. Saw the temp gauge go up a little, but we hauled that thing strong with no problems. Well worth the upgrades

Adding an auxiliary ATF cooler to an Expedition must not be a common occurrence because I have yet to find a single YouTube video of it being done. Three months ago when I added one to our 2007 Odyssey I did so after watching a dozen or so videos and picture filled PDFs. Not a one for a 3rd generation Expy.
I'd like to replace both coolers with the Ford HD so all the holes and brackets line up.
Thanks for the tips on topping off the ATF.

if you go ahead and add one, don't bother with a tube and fin design- they're useless by my reckoning.... get a stacked plated design. they're marginally more expensive, but work not a little better but a lot.

I have a 2015 XLT that was SUPPOSED to have a transmission cooler, the brackets were there but the cooler wasn't. It cost me $300 to have one installed. Money well spent as the transmission temps were 215 pulling a 26 foot trailer on the level in 45F temperatures. Believe me, it is worth it. Don't confuse the intercooler for the turbo for a transmission cooler as the salesman tried to convince me. Good luck!

Go to Ford and have them look up the Trailer package cooling system and buy the parts, then everything will bolt right on and you'll be good.

Thank you for posting the cost with the illustration.
@bsevans5 thank you for answering my original question.

I did make a big mess when I installed the cooler on the Odyssey. Fluid on me, various places in the engine bay and the street. Messy but the temperature gauge didn't budge at low speeds in Arizona at 6,000 plus elevation. I want to get to that point with the Expedition.

Own a 2015 Expedition Eco Boost with a tow package. Tow an enclosed Trailex Trailer with a 3000lb car, 12 wheels and misc for about 5200-5500lbs. Up hills I will see 220, and have seen a spike to 235. On flats in the summer towing I'm seeing 215 all day and 207 is a very common highway temp when I'm not towing. I have a factory cooler, why not add a larger pan, which are readily available and I'm due for a fluid change anyway, which I do annually with Ford Factory Fluid, the dealer performs the service.

http://www.jegs.com/i/Performance-Automatic/732/PA68402/10002/-1

Plenty of room for this pan. Is there any concern with temps to low, say in the winter?

Thanks in advance and this is my first post, so show mercy!!

You might want to look at this site:

http://estimate.myautomatictransmission.com/transmission-fluid-application-guide/

I'm not going to pretend to know everything about tranny fluid(boy, THAT could be taken quite differently on a very different forum<LOL>) but running in the high 230's with a heavy load doesn't sound like something that you will want to do regularly.

As 07 alluded to....I had thought that the HD tow package included both a larger radiator and larger tranny cooler. Anyone know for sure?
