So I'll keep this brief but it's important for me to get the experts to weigh in - We currently tow a camper and a boat during the summer (obviously not at the same time). The boat and trailer are approximately 3500 lbs and the 16 foot Scamp is about 2500 LBS with gear. So weight and towing capacity are not my questions. I currently tow with a 2006 Jeep Commander 4.7 L V8. I've always been a Jeep guy but, when I didn't own a Jeep it was a Ford (well most of the time I'm kind of a gear head and have owned a lot of cars and trucks). That being said, I haven't been impressed with Jeep's build quality and the Commander has 171k (plus it was stolen, purchased back from the insurance company and still rolling). It is being to smell "Oily" soooooo with the rep of this engine and its history - well lets just say it's time to move on.

Here is my question - I tend to get attached to my vehicles, especially a tow vehicle because it has all those great memories. So I've convinced my self that this truck no matter which one - I should approach as my "last truck" and build it to last. Let me also say my job has been keeping a "Good Used" tow vehicle going for years now because I aways buy used (mom gets the new car I get the dinged up jeep that hauls the toys). And that's ok! I thoroughly enjoy shopping, researching and looking. But, now it's a matter of reliability and longevity. We are getting older (early 50's) and don't need to break down on our way to the Keys with our sailboat. ALL THAT BEING SAID. I've even research the 6.0 or 7.3 power strokes. But, fear the maintenance will get ugly (though I came really close to buying 2005 Super Duty last weekend. Then along comes all the post about the reliability and longevity of the Ford Expedition and I think well lets have a look around Currently I'm comparing the following vehicles: 2005 Super Duty's, LEXUS 470GX (Toyota Land Cruiser), Various Suburban platforms and a 2001 Expedition with 128k original miles, all the services records and a good service history. The owner is asking $4200 and there is not a rip in the leather or any major body damage. Also, the owner just did uppers and lowers on the front end, new brakes and tires in the last 7k says it's ready to anywhere. The Super Duty's are not going to even be close in price as you know. I tapped out at $5000 on the 2005 in the negotiations. It needed brakes, ac was questionable and there where A LOT of check engine lights on and a broken window. That could get price fast on a diesel. The Toyota has 233k and also, according the owner needs nothing and will go anywhere now. But, it's $4900 could get it for $4600 maybe... so there it is. I'm also looking at a 2nd Gen 2003 with 140k also "ready to go." So what would you guys do? I guess I already know because I'm on the forum. But, help me understand if this is a good value based on the above plan. My "biggest complaint" with the Jeep is when I went to rebuild the Jeep it was going to be like 5K!!! "I'm out!" Will the expo take the miles? Will she get me to the keys and back or over the Rockies with a small camper and look good doing it? Let me hear some stories.

I should add that the 2001 is a 2WD. For towing I think this might actually make more sense. Again, any thoughts are welcome.

I had a 2000 Eddie Bauer before my 08 and it was an excellent vehicle and perfectly suited to your needs. They’re cheap, easy to work on and was easily the most well built and dependable vehicle I have ever owned. I sold it to a buddy and still sometimes regret getting rid of it. If you’re towing you want the 5.4, as it has the more robust 4R100 transmission found in the super duty line line. Mileage towing is poor, but it will easily handle your needs and Id hands down take it over the other options any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

I can't compare to the others, but I had a 2000 Expedition that gave me 260,000 miles in heavy railroad service before the head gasket blew. An excellent truck that should give you a few good years. Just remember you are considering a 20 year old truck, and just about any vehicle starts to get a bit grouchy after 15 years. I had some minor repairs after that mark including a steering box and exhaust manifold. No deal killer. A well designed and built truck.

I would go for it! I’ve had my 99 since new, minor usual maintenance. It’s been good to me. I tow about 9000 lbs. no problem. 110,000. Miles. I have the AWD 5.4 with towing package.
Good luck.

I have a 2000 XLT 5.4, full time AWD with 352K miles on the original engine and tranny. I pulled a 4000Lb boat and trailer for years in hilly country with this truck. It has the tow package and is perfect for heavy hauling. As mentioned in this thread, these are easy to fix and inexpensive to maintain. I love the AWD/4 wheel drive especially pulling a big boat up or down a steep ramp. Hanging on to mine till the bitter end and that's no where in sight!

i have 2 1st gen expedition, 1 i bought new in 97 170k and a 2000 Eddie Bauer i bought from original owner in 2019 with 138 k and all service records. IMHO the 2 valve 5.4 were the best engines, easy to work on. (I also have an 03 Excursion V10 2 valve original owner) I am not a trained mechanic but i can pretty much do everything you need to keep these things on the road. i did intake manifold last week on my 2000 due to cracked plastic coolant crossover. if you service these things they will last until they rust out.

^^ ain’t that the truth.

For me, I have a 2000 EB 4x4 and I did the coilover conversion twice now T 220,*** miles.

I drive a lot, 500-1000 miles a week on Florida highways. It’s starting to beat me up. I mean I feel ever bump, pebble, everything on the road. At the end of the day I’m beat.

Really need to decide if I want to take a chance on a 3.5 eco on a 2017 or so Expy.

They ride a lot smoother.

I bought my 98 new. I like the truck and have pulled my 4500 lb boat every summer. I have never thought the ride was good, reality is its very rough feeling every bump in the road. The transmission is sleepy unless you drive it hard. It was weak pulling up hills. so for me i do love the truck but never a great puller in my opine. Recently i installed a 2002 5.4 with a little more HP and torque, so maybe performance will improve. I have a 2007 Audi Q 7 4.3 that is far superior to the expedition, a much safer vehicle given the newer technology.
But I still like the expedition

I currently drive a 2000 XLT 4x4 with the 5.4. Its my daily and i love it. It goes anywhere i want it. When it had 280k miles on it the head gasket started to leak oil on the passenger side but never coolant. I continued to drive it and it now has 401k miles on it. I love this thing so much I decided to bight the bullet and it is at the shop right now getting new head gaskets, exhaust manifold and timing chains. I know its sounds crazy but everything works on it and i know the entire history of the vehicle and i have an open check book policy when it comes to maintenance. Your treat these vehicles right and they will take care of you.

Hi Craig, What did the towing package include for your model year?

Hitch and harness set up, beefed up transmission with a cooler. I think that was it, suspension seems beef up in the rear as well. Sorry I didn’t respond sooner.

Our 2000 Eddie Bauer 2WD was a very reliable primary race car tower for 10 years and then it was relegated to the kids' college ride duties. Now 175k and still runs strong in semi-retirement. Upgraded to Bilsteins. Beyond regular maintenance; replaced leveling compressor, new fuel pump, injectors, ball joints, brakes and rebuilt rear-end. A bit envious to see the clean ones here, because our paint didn't hold up well. Probably time to let it go...
