Recently my 4x4 has vanished. When I try to engage the electronic on the fly 4x4, 4hi or 4low does not engage. I'm not even sure the awd is working. I do hear a few clicks from behind the switch when trying to turn on the 4x4. But intermittent clicks. I did replace the GEM and this is when the clicking returned but no 4x4. Not sure where to proceed from this point. Any suggestions or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

Update your signature line with year model and engine information. This can be done in the USER CP section as this information helps others give you replies specific to your vehicle.

Or just tell us - although I think the mechanics of the 4x4 system didn't change a lot.

First step is fuses, then vacuum, then hard-wires to the right places.

My apologies for not including this data. Am I to check all fuses or specific ones. I looked at a few referenced within the owners manual. How can you tell if those ********* fuses are bad?

how well can you read and understand electrical diagrams. when you check fuses use a meter or a test light. don't just look at them and assume they are good

In the Battery Junction Box under hood check fuse 104
In the Central Junction Box under the dash check fuses 15 and 23

When you put the key in the ign and just turn it to the run position without starting what lightws for the 4x4 come on?

will let you decide if it changed.

the 97 and 98 had vacuum components in the system where as the 99 thru 02 didn't

the 97 -98 also had 2wd mode where as the 99-02 didn't

Having someone look at the vacuum system when they don't have it causes going on a wild goose chase and confusion

SOO....

You mean "yes, they changed"

I'm saying you can at least attempt to give somebody direction UNTIL they give specifics. Sending somebody to look for a vacuum system isn't a wild goose chase; they look and don't see it, then move to the next one. C'mon man.

which ********* fuses are you referring to??

As they may be the relays

I checked all the fuses, that have been suggested. Put them all on a meter and they are all good. Relays are what I was referring to as the black fuses.

When I turn the key to the on position, 4low illuminates and eventually shot off as do other indicator lights.

I'm quite impressed with the of effort from this forum. Hopefully, a solution to my problem will be uncovered.

Many Thanks

I totally agree with the "C'mon man" Being you suggested that the OP first check fuses then vacuum I would say you were sending him on a wild goose chase. Can you imagine the confusion he would have had looking for a vacuum system that didn't exist and the questions he would have asked.

We may not agree on certain issues But I am sure that you would have to agree that the information you provided was not specific to his 2000 expedition

Any more ideas of where to look next. Gem module has been replaced and all fuses have been verified operational.

take a look at the 4wheel drive mode switch and check the resistance in each position put an ohm meter across the two Dark Blue leads and you should read the resistance in each position as shown on the 1st print (34-1)

I checked the 4wheel drive mode switch in all 3 positions. All 3 positions checked out OK with a meter across the 2 blue wires.
