--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all, I have not been on in a while, I read several threads that did not address my particular problem.

1. My 2001 Expedition, 4.6 2wd od trans has several leaks, i will explain.

First leaks was the front seal, it was replaced about six months before I purchased the vehicle, I have owned it 3 months.

Then the trans pan formed a leak, I replaced trans pan gasket with genuine ford parts, made sure pan sealing surface was flat and re-installed.

A few days later the pan gasket was leaking again, re-torqued bolts, no more leak.

Now the tail shaft seal is leaking, dropped driveshaft, removed seal and inspected for any defects. Installed new seal, and drove for a few weeks and it started to leak again at the tail shaft seal. Now I am about to install a second seal, inspection of driveshaft revealed no groove in shaft or obvious damage. Tail shaft of trans inspected, no defects apparent. Not sure what to do next and any ideas will be appreciated. Last thing the drive shaft yoke is solid and drivshaft was marked before removal and installed in same position.

Im not real familiar with ford transmissions but assuming it has a vent somewhere... might check that to make sure it isn't plugged with dirt.... too much pressure can make seals leak left and right

yes check the vent to make sure it is not clogged... also if there is a groove wore into the shaft use a speedy sleeve to fix that problem and you should be good

I did clean and inspect the yoke, no obvious damage, the yoke is nice and tight, trans mount has no separation of the rubber, no quiver when taking off. However I replaced the tail shaft housing seal a second time. Since replacing seal, no more leak. I have to give it a few days and see if it leaks. Thanks, to all who offered advice.

I had same idea, easy to find on GM trans. Have not found vent on Expo yet, still looking. I think you are right on about the vent. I noticed that when the trans dip stick is not inserted fully into tube, it leaked less.
