light bar vs pre-runner

Hey every one,
Im having trouble deciding if i want to go with a light bar or a prerunner style.
I like the light bar in that it sits close to the bumper. I also like that the pre runner style offers some protection for the lights themselves. Is there a way to mount the runner style " closer"?
(Less frt protrusion?)

Any info is apreciated, and side view pics of the prerunner style would help volumes.

Sorry, been away for awhile.
I am thinking of going with a light bar, its a little more civilized.
That is if i can find one for a 97
