Monkeying around with the truck trying to boost it...

Key in the ignition, got out to hook up the jumper cables, wind closed the door behind me, hooking up the cables triggered the locks and I'm locked out.

Only have one key.

Don't know the code for the key pad.

Have access to the engine bay (hood open).

Options besides getting Ford to cut a key based on the VIN?

Get a slim Jim for the door to jimmy the lock. Any locksmith or tow truck driver has them. Some tow drivers are better than others at it. Hell even some police have them. About twenty years back, I locked my keys in my Datsun 280z, it was funny the two cops were fighting each other who was going to open my car!

The code for the doors is under drivers side dash. When I bought my 2000, last year, I stopped by dealer, in Daly City, where I live. A tech was nice to crawl under dash and read me code. Hardware stores make a second chip key for $70.00. Had mine done last week. As far as backup key, make a valet key with no chip to hide somewhere outside of vehicle. That way your not out $70.00 if it falls off.

Get a large screwdriver and a small piece of wood to act as a wedge. Get a long stiff rod about 4 ft long and gently pry the top corner of the drivers side door just enough to insert the wedge(a wooden door stopper is excellent) . Insert the rod through the small opening. The trick is to press the unlock button with the rod.

That should be in your to-do list - get the code and write it down somewhere. You can also add your own code so its easier to remember.

Anyone know if the dealer can get you the code by calling in?

Great Idea now think about it.

yes they will get you the code but not by calling in Think of it this way If I were to get your vin number from the windshield and I were to call the dealer for the code Just how happy would you be if he gave it to me. You need proof that the vehicle is yours or have it there in person. And it may cost you to get it.

I agree, back in the 1970's, all the Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, motorcycles had the key number stamped right on the ignition. All a thief would have to do is go by the local dealer, show a registration for any bike with it saying that make. They went to their box of spare keys, and some poor soul lost his bike. No breaking anything, just ride it away! We've come a long ways!

Yes - but it depends if you know the dealer enough. I can get keys made calling in (for a non-ford brand) because I know the parts adviser well enough

Its amazing what the 3 bucks a year on my insurance covers...

I had a similar problem, Cleaning the throttle, only I locked myself out with the CAR ON, only key in the ignition. I discovered that my "roadside assistance" on my insurance covers a quick door unlock. Done before I ran out of gas! [Yes, I have learned easy ways to stop the engine since, every time I tell this story someone tells me a new one.]

Ever had to crawl through a second story window with a ladder, cause you locked yourself out. Happens to the smartest people out there. All the people with back up keys are nowhere to be found. Funny how that always seems to happen.

So let this be a reminder - keep spare keys somewhere near and update your keypad lock codes

Mechanics always roll the window down before they park the car in their bay.

And don't drink too many beers when working on trucks, or you forget door codes, or where you put spare key.

Just think if someone did that to you and got a key and stole your vehicle

Bet you would go and celebrate

In the Bay Area, theirs a ring of thugs that come over from Oakland, have a buddy at dmv, runs a printout of chevy ss blazers 2006 and up, and boost a bunch in 1 night. Happened to friend of mine. They never recovered it. Keep your pit bull inside your SUV, guess that's the plan.

One more reason I dont want my home address on my registration. You could switch your registration to a PO box right?

Pay your insurance bill. Better plan.

Much like trying to return cans with deposits from states that dont have deposits, it is not exactly the best plan to boost a car - unless they were worth a lot. Your bay area example is most likely a latino cartel, best way to get a fleet fast - and off the books.

You got that right. I heard it's actually an African American gang that's boosting the blazers. These are sweet little SUVs. With 350 to 427 CID engines, all black. Wish ford made these, they are trick!
