Recently, I have been looking at replacing the stock exhaust system for something that would make my '99 sound better. My question is: If I'm primarily looking for a change in sound, would it be better to just replace the factory installed muffler with an aftermarket muffler such as a flowmaster super 44 series (recommended to me by a family friend), or to save up some money and replace the whole set-up?

JSALLEN, if all you are after is more volume, then yes, a muffler like you are talking about will accomplish that. now, if you are looking at getting more power out of the truck, this is a loaded question. What do I mean by this? It is easy. You can open up the exhaust and get something that will make a lot more power from the engine, but this is due to reducing back pressure. Back pressure is what makes the low end torque (what makes the truck get off the line from just above idle). So, a large diameter exhaust system will be great for the moments when you are at 5,000 RPM. But down at 2,000 RPM, it can be a real drag because the engine will not be able to make adequate power. So, there in itself becomes a balancing game of opening up the exhaust system to get more power, but keeping it restrictive enough to make good low end power and keep the mileage up.

straight pipe instead of the muffler. Best thing I have done to my truck. Sounds great, cost me $50 at a shop. I got a little bit better MPGs out of it aswell and it made me really get on the throttle more lol.
I get a quiet rumble thats barely louder than stock.... but when you get on the skinny pedal it turns heads.
I left all 4 Cat converters in it and just cut out the muffler and put a pipe in its place. No popping back presssure like most straight piped set-ups b/c of the Cats being in
Best $50 I ever spent

my sig has my set up.... but I would just put a flowmaster 40 series or 44 or 10 (fell in love with them the other night) and call it a day... will get the sound and minimal price

JSALLEN, as you are seeing, there are lots of ideas of what is "the best". What I would suggest is holding off on the exhaust until you do a little bit of "noise research". What do I mean about this, simple. As you drive around, listen to other Ford trucks and how they sound. When you find one that sounds like what you are after, politely tell the person that you like how their truck sounds and what did they do to the exhaust. Most people are going to be more than willing to tell you what they did. Find the commonalities to the systems that you like the sound of and go from there.

To give you an idea of what I have, I went more on the wild side and went with a true due exhaust setup using dual 2.5" pipes and ran the dual pipes back to a dual in/dual out Flowmaster 70 series muffler and then dual pipes out from there (2.5" pipes). I get lots of people asking me what I am running as the note is not much more than stock in volume, but has a little bit of a rumble to it and when I get on it, you know I have done something to the exhaust, yet it is not objectionable either outside or inside the truck.

Please keep in mind that things like having the "California emissions" (aka, 4 cats vice 2) will provide some more back pressure which can allow you to run a less restrictive muffler while maintaining the necessary back pressure. I built my system more around maintaining low end grunt vice high end power as I do my share of 4x4ing and never take the truck up to 5,000 RPM. Most of my time is down under 2,000.

So, get out there, listen to some other trucks and see what you like.

Baker, as I recall, that is the "difference" between a cali emissions vehicle and a non-cali emissions vehicle. There might be a slight difference in programming of the ECU, but for the most part, that is the big difference.

Thermo..I am not much into noise...mild rumble is O.K. I was thinking about something like this and was wondering if this would help with some performance and MPG

Just put this system on my 99 XLT 4x4 4.6 last month. Super easy and fit perfect. Has a nice sound, just a little more than stock. I wasn't crazy about the chrome tips so I did some turndowns. I need to get some pix. Bought mine on Amazon.com for 360.00 if I remember right. MPG went from 12.5 to 15.

why do people get prefab exhaust systems? any good shop will have a tube bender and for the price of buying a kit and having it shipped and installed you can buy a muffler and have a shop build you a complete kit. even cheaper if its just a simple pipe and a few bends.

why do people by condoms....becuase it comes in a box one size fits several models and once your done.....get your motor runnin....LMAO....here in Michigan shops are rip offs...I needed a muffler and a turn down on a 2003 Malibu....two different shops wanted 200 to 225...I got the same thing online for 75.00 in a box and shipped...and did it myself...I would love to have some custom work done...but I will wait till next month when I move to Tennessee then get me a deal...I will even cut off the last converter and let them do 3" pipe and decide what I will do from there....
