Looks like my rims have some sort of plastic cover glued on them??

A year or so ago, I started to notice that the rims on my 2005 Limited started to look ugly.. Like the chrome was peeling off. Upon further investigation it almost looks like there is some sort of cover glued on the rims?? I can get a screwdriver in between the cover and the rim but feel that if i force it, it will just break the cover.

Is this something that sounds familiar or did the previous owner do something weird to it??

Thanks!!

Really hard to see, but this was the best i could do. On the right is the rim. You can see gap and then the chrome colored plastic cover.

Starting to look pretty ugly.

I'm thinking of maybe sanding it all down and then spray paining it but better would be to be able to take that plastic cover off somehow..

I'm guessing it is a piece that is supposed to hold in the chrome insert or something. I would just sand em up and plasti-dip them as is. That stuff dries flat no matter what you spray it on it seems like.

The rims aren't actually chrome they're steel or aluminum with a plastic chrome cladded covering. My 04 Ram had the stock 20s and they were the same way. I wouldn't try prying it off unless you were junking the wheels, I'm kinda curious to see what it looks like under there now but if you're keeping them I'd just sand & paint em or plasti-dip them.

Ford replacement wheels are not expensive if you shop them out. Not as inexpensive as dipping or spraying them yourself though.

I had wheel covers on a cavalier that where held in by the lugs I believe. You can try and take the center cap off to confirm.

If possible I would remove them to paint or plasti dip.
