I am having many problems with my 2000 Expy 4.6L

1.) Hesitation on acceleration
2.) Random Surges
3.) Stalls when accelerating quickly
4.) Stalls on Idle

Parts Replaced

1.) Fuel Pump (Pressure test 30 psi Haynes reccomends 50psi) Remained 30psi after pump change.
2.) IAC Replaced
3.) Spark Plugs
4.) Fuel Filter

Any and all ideas welcome.

Thank you

My top 5 list

1. Vacuum leak
2. fuel pressure regulator
3. Damaged/kinked fuel line
4. Secondary ignition/Coil issue
5. Wires chafed/grounded to sensors or ECU

Are there any codes?

Currently there are NO codes. I have however disconnected the battery many times in an effort to try and figure out whats is going on.

At one point I got many codes like there was an entire system melt down then the codes would go away.

I bought this with problems but I didn't anticipate so many.

had the same problem

on my 2002 5.4. It took six months but it finally threw out a check engine light. I almost ran over several people to get to a local Auto Zone. #8 coil on plug was the trouble. It's pain in the ___ to replace. It runs like new now.

LOL I did the same thing to get to Advanced Auto that is when they came up with so many codes. I guess part of me doesn't want to believe so many trouble codes could be true.

I have done several things to troubleshoot and plugs where one of them and yes, It took me several hours to do frigen 8 plugs. I can't remember what plug it was but I had to use extension, swivel, extension to get to the damn coil on plug screw.

The coil plug screw is what caused all the problem. Maybe next time I'll be able to shave off a couple hours now that I am experienced:D

Dealer needs to Re-program

Has anyone ever been told that the dealer may need to re-program the Expy anti-theft system. I took my car to a mechanic with all the symptoms from above and this is what I was told???

yes, but that does not sound like your problem here. I may be wrong as I'm new to the X, but with past ford vehicles, the anti theft will cause a no crank/ no start condition.

UPDATE Expy 4.6L is running a little better

Well the other day I decided to go through the plugs and coils again. This time I actually went out and bought a couple of new coils @ $30 bucks a whack. I installed them. I noticed that a few of the coils where not 100% tight so I added a few washers (the coils just didn't want to snug tight)

So far I eliminated the following:

1.) Hesitation on acceleration
2.) Random Surges
3.) Stalls when accelerating quickly
4.) Stalls on Idle

Now I have to deal with 'Lean on bank 1 and 2'

On your running lean, look at that thread above and for other vacuum leaks. Take a look at your O2 sensors (more than likely not the problem, but can get awfully dirty and stuck lean. I had the same issue with a Jeep that ended up being a big glob of bad wiring. I went thru everything head to toe cleaning, recleaning, replacing, blah!!! LoL

Good luck!

ramdom surges

I have a 2006 expedtion that surges when I try to stop.when trying to stop it feels like you have one foot on the brake and the other on the gas is that what yours was doing. ford replaced my throltle body but that didn't fix the problem.
