First and foremost:
- If you worried about gas consumption now, you should simply not think about purchasing a 6000lb SUV, of any make. They will all get "bad" gas mileage.

The reasons on getting a large SUV are for: Safety (bigger wins), comfort, amount you are carrying/towing (large family, boats, horses, "stuff").

Second:
You can't increase the gas mileage without causing other issues. You can put on smaller tires, re-gear, etc. but they all effect the overall performance of the vehicle. Some claim mileage increases when they increase HP and Torque, but even if true, the result is that one has to use Premium gas instead of regular, at what, and extra 30 cents a gallon?

In any case, the money I have seen people spend on Hp/Mileage increases will take a LONG time to pay back, if ever.

Finally, the MPG:

Miles PER gallon:
- Set tripmeter to zero
- fill up tank
- drive (usually to near empty)
- divide the number of miles driven by the number of gallons needed to fill the tank up.

or, if the Exby has it, the message center automatically does this for you.

Note: The above methods are not accurate if you change tire size without recalibrating the system.

No, they're right. If your worried now, you'll be even more "worried" when gas goes up another .30 a gallon.

We drive them like rwinch says is for the safety and amount of stuff you can haul. I personally have a family of five and need alot of room to carry stuff. I DISPISE minivans, therefore i have a suv. Also, in my area you need 4wd. Minivans with 4wd are few and far between and expensive.

I will say this, if you ever decide to bite the bullet and get one, you'll never go back. The view of the road, safety of size, roominess, and sheer fun to drive will keep you in one from now on.

Occasionally I reset my electronic mpg guage as i leave on a trip. Im cruising on the freeway and the guage is reading around 16.2 mpg or so and i think cool thats not too bad. I get to a major mtn. pass like the grapevine and bamm its starts counting down like a bomb timer. 15.8 ....15.2....14.5.. etc. SO if fuel mileage is a concern dont get an expedition. I baby it and get around 14.5 usually, my wife takes off for the day and its at 13.0. it takes a week to get it back up to 13.5. I know i pay way tooo much attention to it so now i leave it on the miles before empty setting rather than mpg. My expedition had 14k when i got it in 2001 and i only have 31k now so its my utility truck not a commuter.

icehouse, did you know you can reset the average mpg? After fillups, I just hit the two buttons at the same time while the average mpg is displayed, which resets the average figure. That way, you can get the average mpg per fillup.

By doing this after your significant other drives, you can get the display to read where it should!!!

Had the same in an 01 Excursion V10 4x4 it took a egg on the gas pedal to keep it out of single digits turn on the 4x4, and A/C and I could count the MPG on 1 hand , and still have a free finger, and thumb.. Yeah that's it, put out my thumb roadside and wait for a rice burner to take me to my destination (((Naw NO WAY))))) Just for kicks I would cruise down the h-way put it in neutral and wow suddenly 99 MPG. dishonest trick before you sell it to booost the MPG on the display... lol

Improved it using the exhaust, intake, and programmer. Shot it to hell with the 3/2 lift. Throw a hitch mounted cargo carrier, all the luggage and a full cabin of people and gear and I'm struggling to get 17 mpg. Presently in the middle of a 4000 mile journey with the family for Thanksgiving. I don't think it's too shabby.

Everyone in here knew when purchasing the Expedition that you would get reamed in gas. But think of it this way: You gotta pay to play. And I would rather play in an Expedition.
