thanks guys!

i am way x-cited about my expy. i'm a life-long, car super freak.

expedition: i had to have a limited. imho the all one color looks the best.

i also really wanted the pop out rear windows, heated mirrors w turn signals and the wood/leather wheel.

i would like to get some ford 20's. unsure exactly which yet.

i replaced the headlights, black OE. $439.00 at the stealership. nothing wrong with originals, they're available

i also have the original window sticker, which is nice.

my expy has everything on it exactly as i would have ordered it...if i could have afforded it new.

why did you replace the headlights?

i just wanted to start over fresh and put HIR [yes, HIR, NOT HID] bulbs in them.

they're in excellent shape and blacked out-would look good on your expy!

245.00 shipped, w new bulbs.

what is HIR? I'm looking to upgrade to xenon's, but don't want to blind the whole world driving at me! Our headlight assemblies are not really designed for xenon's and am just worried they won't have a well defined beam pattern... anyone do this?

HIR bulbs

rick

essentially an HIR is 80% of HID for 20% of the cost.

Halogen infared reflecting bulbs are made in only 2 types, 9011 [9005 high], and 9012 [9006 low].
the 9012 low beam has been discontinued.

bulbs are standard wattage, yet produce twice the [visible] lumens-light.

drawbacks- hard to find and expensive, $40.00 [range] per bulb.

good points-lots of bright white usable light and long life.

i have a source.

if there is interest maybe i can arrange a group buy

I've been wanting to do HIRs in my high beams. Might do it in a couple weeks.

From what I had heard, it was the high beams that were discontinued by Toshiba. I know John Deere (yes, the tractor company) had HIRs low beams for cheap (think they were the Toshiba ones too). They were 12-15 dollars per bulb.

As far as HIDs, I have them in my low beams. They actually have a pretty decent cut off. There is a small bit of stray light, but the black OEM housings would cure that since it's just light reflecting from the chrome housing.

My 9005 fogs were on in both pictures.

The problem with a lot of HID retrofits is that they put them in dual filament housings. In other words, there is only one reflector. Any difference in focal point can make the difference between low beams and high beams. Also, when people put them in the older, "frosted" headlights, they put out a lot of glare.

We have a dedicated single beam. Although it doesn't comletely eliminate the glare, it's cut down by a lot. After aiming them, I have yet to be flashed, and it's been more than a year (took those pix in Aug 2008).

As far as cost, I'd get some VVMEs. They are the ballast I have in right now. My friend has been running his VVME fogs in his S4 for long than I have, and they've yet to fail. Even if they do fail, you can just get another kit for cheap :)

Non-factory HID's are still ILLEGAL.

HIR's are legal and a lot less hassle. Trim tabs, plug n play!

So are tinted windows, tinted taillights, not running front plates in some states, music too loud in some states, certain aftermarket exhaust systems, speeding, tailgating, improper lane-usage, not using your turn signals, etc.

I think in the case of non-factory xenon's, if you are mindful of how and where your headlights are pointed, it is alot less worse of an offense than many of the above... None of which anyone here would do.

In my particular case, I have driven enough cars with them that I would like to try and make work in this new car. I'm not really sure why Ford wouldn't see fit to install them from the factory on a $53k car, especially in light of the fact that they have them in the Flex and Navigator...

FWIW, the 03-06 Navis had HIDs (well, it was an option), not just the newer Navis.

Elevato, I'm well aware as the whole time I owned my '05, I wanted to try to figure out how to make the conversion! And that fact is even more irritating that they couldn't cross those various parts over to the facelift Expy!

none of these can temporarily blind you.

people are certainly free to have whatever they want.

Hey Expi, I'm not trying to argue with you, and that's why I said... "I think in the case of non-factory xenon's, if you are mindful of how and where your headlights are pointed..." I don't believe that these will temporary blind you. I just want to be able to see!

not trying to get a debate/argument started either.

any light, ESPECIALLY HID'S should always be correctly and courtesiously aimed.

i am also disapointed in the expy headlights. Even with HIR's, there is no real well defined beam pattern-sharp cut off, way too much scattered light.

thank God the fogs aren't bad...

i don't want this to become a lighting thread.

maybe we can/should start a headlight poll/thread...
