Thought I'd post some photos of my overland build. The wheels were upgraded to 34.3" diameter, which required some trimming of the running boards (inboard side) and wheel well liners. With the larger wheel diameter, the speedometer has about a 5mph error at 70mph (driving at 70mph, the actual vehicle speed is 75mph). I've tried reprogramming the wheel diameter with ForScan, but it wouldn't take any larger value over stock. Regardless, the car rides beautifully smooth while having considerably higher ground clearance and wider track without too much poke. Wheel spacers were chosen to keep the wheels flush with the fender flares. It gives the vehicle overall 3" wider stance, and a 4" higher ride.
The roof rack is equipped with 4x Pelican cases, all-weather, adding a total of about 12 cubic feet of storage. We keep the following stored in them:
- Tent, 2x sleeping bags, 2x sleeping mattresses, blankets, pillows, 4x folding chairs, camping grill, camping table.
- ReadyLift 3" leveling kit - 69-2831 (the max lift possible with the CCD suspension that the Platinum has)
- Extended lower trailing arms, tie rods, and upper control arms from Rough Country (to keep the rear wheels centered)
- KSP Performance black 1.5" Hubcentric Wheel Spacers
- 18" OEM Ford F-150 Tremor wheels
- 295/70R-18 BFGOODRICH ALL-TERRAIN T/A KO3 E tires
- Baja forged fender flares
- Thule Caprock XL platform
- Thule WingBar crossbars (the entire roof platform is detachable from the roof)
- Thule Awning
- 2x Pelican BX140 all-weather storage cases
- 1x Pelican BX90R all-weather storage case
- 2x Rotopax aux gasoline containers (2 gal each)
- KC HiLites Gravity Pro6 50" LED light bar
- Victory 4x4 Side Racks (attached to rear glass with 2x heavy duty suction cups, and attached to the roof rack with bolts on swivel)
- Bunker Industries recovery boards
- Lowe's mini shovel
Overall, about $11k spent. The only labor I paid for was to install the lift kit. The rest was assembled by me with a lot of trips to the Lowe's nuts & bolts department.
I figured I'd share this as this is not a popular nor common overland conversion vehicle. I was a little worried that I wouldn't be able to squeeze a full-size spare with the 34.3" diameter in the original spare location (in the rear, underneath), but it fit with not a hair to spare! As for gas mileage, with the added drag of the roof components, and the higher ride hight and grittier tires, MPG dropped from about 21mpg on the highway to about 16mpg. Well worth it though!
Overall, I wish Ford would make an Expedition Raptor!!
