My Expy has cancer.

Well I posted previously on the exterior area. I found my expy has some severe rust under the body. Worst under the front radiator and two mounting points. Also behind the rear tires around the mounting locations there. I decided to treat one area today and see how it works. I pulled the front drivers side fender apron and wheel. I scraped and vacuumed all the loose rust off then treated it with Gemplers rust converter. (two coats) After 48 hours it is recommended to paint with an oil based paint to seal it well.

I hope to treat it all a few areas at a time as I have time. I hope to at least slow it down if not stop it so it will last.

hope your repairs stops the rust.... I remember when DGray69 had to redo his rad support cuz it rotted out on him.... was a pain in the @$$ repair job

I will try and stay on top of it. I think when I go to pull the motor I will remove the front bumper and radiator at that time and do a more thorough job for the whole front support area. Need to find a decent welder so some metal repairs can be done. I have done a little welding but suck at it.

Studying the rust site it appears to me the way the metal was tack welded together it was catching/ holding water and accelerating the rust. So I will try and either epoxy or silicone the top of the joint to keep water from migrating into the site. I will keep updating on the progress.

I am surprised others dont have the same issue. Of course it is not easy to see.....you have to look for it. The only reason it is visible in my photo is because I removed the fender apron. You could also see it if you remove the front bumper assembly. If someone had the control arms rust through it would be worth checking.

Of course I purchase this expy with 84,000 miles on it so who knows what the previous owner did with it. Guessing a lot of driving in the snow/ salty roads.

youve only had it 2 years nuts? wow. and she looks that good. i have cancer, but its just surface. i need to treat it now! might bed line it. cover up all the hoses and what not above the front cross member and spray it. should be a fun task. o and speaking of. how you you stop rust on the roof? i have some above the windshield. ill take a pic tomorrow.

Mine is an 05 and it has the same cancer. I am the second owner and mine spent its first five years in Michigan. I am hopping that being in Florida will slow down the spread. GOOD LUCK on the war you started. Rust is a formidable foe

not with that salty air. mines all rusty from the southern cali salty air.

Hey walnuts. I am going to try your suggestion of por15 to seal the problem areas. I got to see some por15 treated parts today and it appears very durable. Think I will use rust converter initially to treat/convert rust then later apply por 15 to seal it. Might do the whole frame and underbody while I am at it.

por15 is an amazing product i sold it at a paint shop in mesa az space age auto paint. i have used on mothers 67 comaro love it just cant afford myself. my truck spent most its life in illinois and tennessee i cant afford to give it a por15 bath.
