change them cold, torque to 16 ft lbs, use anti-seize is your option, you may need a few swivels for the sockets. Take your time
You may also want to instal new boots at the same time if your not replacing coils and use dielect grease on the coil wires.
Most on here recommend motorcraft plugs I have had good luck with autolites

+1 on the autolite plugs. My 4.6 had a set that the po claimed to have changed about 80k miles ago.they were worn like it too. Went back with autolite and so far so good

Keep in mind that doing all the right things is no guarantee that you won't have a blowout issue. You may be minimizing the chances, but there are just not enough threads in that head and if any of them are damaged in the least, then a blowout can happen.

Double check the torque for the spark plugs. What i have has the spec of 84-168 in-lbs. That's 7-14 ft-lbs.

for what it is worth I wouldn't go over 20 ft/lbs My own preference has been using 16 ft/lbs That was in both my 99's with 5.4 and a 4.6 and my current 2001 with a 5.4
Again make sure you at least replace the boots and use dielectric grease on the wires also check the coils where the boot wire attaches and clean any corrosion
