I know there is plenty of discussions on this topic but I need a few questions answered first.

My '99 5.4 Expy has roughly 156k miles. Half of which were driven by the previous owner and half by me. I have never changed the fluid and I have to assume that the previous owner did not either. Needless to say it is long overdue.

Recently my Expy has been having issues as described HERE. My neighbor said it may be tranny related and whether it fixes the problem or not, it should be done regardless.

So what is the process I am looking at here? I understand high mileage vehicles are advised against flushes. So simply drain, drop pan, replace filter, replace fluid? How much new oil should I have on hand before draining? What is the recommended oil?

Thanks in advance.

Well ,when you drop the pan you will find a plug in the pan if the fluid was not changed.
this will be around ball with a O-ring and a peg sticking out of it.(used at the factory to plug the dipstick hole in assembly) also the gasket for the pan is reuseable. dont use a felt gasket it WILL leak.

Yeah, I've seen images of the plug. I'll keep an eye out for it. Thanks for the info.
