Ok folks, for the next two years I will be living in Mexico. Already drove the Expy from Chicago to Mexico City, and am now ready to start getting some work done to it. Parts cost down here aren't bad, and the labor cost is literally pennies on the dollar. One of the first things I'd like to get done is the exhaust. It's a '97 EB with almost 200k, and I think it has the original cat, maybe the muffler too, I've only had the truck for about four months.

I'm thinking I need to get everything replaced from the cat back. I'd like some better throttle response, but I'm most interested in improving the mileage. Right now it gets about 14mpg, and it is 100% stock. Gonna do the Gotts mod, and prob. a K&N filter, but not sure which direction to go with the exhaust. I definitely want a good deep sound, but not super loud. Somethin' with a nice rumble, but that won't give the wife a headache. Let me know if there's anything else I should be doing as well. Appreciate the help.

theres no smog in mexico city is there? if not then get some long tube headers delete the cats. true dual with x-pipe and any muffler you like. look them up on youtube. theres a lot of videos. then take your pick. the will improve the sound and mileage as long as you keep out of the throttle. then to really increase the mileage do electric fans. that will help a lot.

Well, in a city of 33 million, yeah there's a good bit of pollution. They have some pretty strict verification tests you have to have done on emissions every year, but we already talked to a few people that filled us in on the way to get around that. Is there a notable difference in going true dual? Thanks for the input!

i have flowmaster cat-back, single in-dual out, with a 40 series muffler. i love it.

and yeah there it is. sound and power. it allows your engine to exhale a lot better then being constricted with the y-pipe thats there. the x-pipe helps each side breathe in equal.

mine is a very simple exhaust that is very clear sounding and loud... removed rear 2 cats... removed factory Y for true duals... then 2 flowmaster 40s...

I'll try to make a video this weekend if the weather gets nice... supposed to be 40s... haven't seen that in a few months...lol

Okay, so it def. sounds like I gotta go true dual. I'm gonna be on youtube tonight trying to hear some of the different muffler options, but I'm curious. Is there a particular brand that is more known for being more of a deep rumble than a loud pop or snarl? Or does it all depend on the series? Really appreciate the info, guys.

IMO... best muffler out there is a flowmaster 40 series.... no real drone while cruising but nice and loud when you want to... but with expy if you do a rear cat delete that makes a big difference...

stright pipe! haha i like my bullet performance. hard to find. but glass packs are really good for beaning mean sounding! my dads cj7 sounds good with them. then again headers and side exits sound good anyways! even on a 304 v8! but stupid cali law wont let us have them on.
