Finally

Well after 7 trips to the Ford dealer, it appears that the problem is solved. The rear radar sensor was replaced. For those who have followed this thread, the rear radar sensor, located above the trailer hitch and behind the plastic bumper cover, was diagnosed by this dealer by his own equipment as a Code: C1983. The so called mechanic needs to go back to school in my opinion. ( This radar sensor is in early 2003 models.)This has now been done at their expense. It pays to due your homework when someone keeps replacing parts when they had the solution all the time. ???? :025: Thanks everyone for all your advice and help.

Bob Glad you finally got it resolved I am having a similar issue on my 2001 but I have 4 sensors on the rear and not sure which one or all may be causing the unit to give me a warning even when nothing is behind me and its intermitting when it does. Its not a big problem as it does what it is supposed to do when backing up in parking lots. Something I can live with for the time being. Was following your problem with great interest and just waiting for you to have success. Was Todd of any help to you in ths issue??

I don't know if you 2001 is similar to my 2003. I checked the backup aid module myself by going to the junk yard and popping 2 separate ones in. In my vehicle, the module in easy to reach through the cup holder located on the driver side behind the rear seat. All you need to do is plug in another one not even removing the old one. There was no change.
If you can find someone with a scan tool that includes the chassis, there should be a code there. The code, if there is one, will point you in the correct direction. When you put your vehicle in reverse, there should not be any sound unless there is an object there. It sounds like a bad sensor. I would unplug each sensor and plug it back in if that is possible on your model.

By the way, this all started last fall and I let it go because when the temperature went below freezing, the system worked fine. Finally, it only worked occasionally when it got real cold. Then I proceeded to try and fix it.

As I said it intermitted at present but it works great when something gets close starts with short beeps and the gets steady. But it does sound when I first start to back up and stops so I am thinking a sensor. I also have a Ford Escape that has the system and it works great so at east I know how it should work, Just waiting for warmer weather to check it out on the 01.

If you find the part you need via a scan, Tasca Parts Center has the parts and reference it to your vin number so it should be the correct part. They also sell on ebay.
