New differential

So im pretty sure that the rear diff in my expedition is going (vibrates and makes weird noises when turning) its the 9.75 (im 90% sure anyways) i would like to replace it with something better. I was thinking about a Detroit locker but I talked to some people and they said they wear out tires, is that true?

anyone have any other suggestions for a good differential?

I would be ok with rebuilding the stock one, but Ive heard you need a special tool to do it, and i refuse to pay ford to do it

By far, the best option is the selectable locker, ARB is my choice, but Eaton also makes one. That way you have complete control over when you want to lock that rear end up.
They are expensive and harder to install, though. So a cheaper, more every-day friendly choice would be a different limited slip unit. (of which there are several to choose from).

A detroit locker sucks on the road, so unless it's primarily a trail rig, I'd forget it.

Any good 4x4 shop should be able to either rebuild your stock unit or install any one of the other units, so you really don't have to go to the dealer.

If you find a 4x4 club in the area, they will be able to point you to a good shop.

I had a detroit locker in the past 2 trucks, loved it in the mud. On the road it takes a little to get use too. Turning corners it tends to lock up and in the winter in gets a little crazy if your not careful.
If your not 4wheeling hard then get a LS or spend $$ on a selectable locker.
Detroits are fun though....:flamingdevil:

yeah, no 4x4 clubs by me, only off-road shop is like 1 1/2 hours away also. I didnt see a E-locker listed on eatons site, arb has one...do you need a air compresser for a arb locker?

yes. and a little tank. so not only do you need $$ for the arb you need everything else. so that adds up QUICK! what engine do you have? the 5.4? then you have the 9.75. to be 100% honest. this rear end SUCKS! its a D60 but with thinner wall axle tubes. also any sort of locker will just destroy your axles. even more so since they are held on by c-clips. break one of those you lose your axle.

but detroits are super funn in the rain! my buddys new colorado has one in it. floor it in the rain lock up and drift! hahaha

i will recommend a detroit over anything else. get that and new axle shafts and you will be set. it would be cheaper then an arb after all said is done. and its true that they wear out tires quicker, but dont floor it around corners. take off in a straight line and then turn once the turn is done then go again. cause they lock up under power. only place you cant stop it is in parking lots. but you get looks from everyone. haha

Yeah i really don't want to mess with a air locker, Screw installing a compressor. I wish they would make a E locker for the 9.75. What about the detroit true trac, those worth getting?
It might be fun to buy a detroit locker, i could deal with people staring at me cause my rear end was clicking/chirping the tires in a parking lot

I figure the true tracs probally better cause it has no clutches to wear out. I think that Ill go that way, I'm going to install som 4.10 gears at the same time also
