I have been looking at features for purchasing a preowned '22 or '23 AWD Expedition and thought I'd ask the forum for advice. If you were to repurchase your Expedition, would you choose the max or regular length, bench or captain seat 2nd row, platinum or stealth model? Additionally, what features do you regret paying or not paying for? If you have the max, does it fit in your garage? Any advice would be appreciated.

I went with regular length because I really wanted it to fit in my garage. Needed to have the buttons so I went with the 12 in screen. The pano roof and captains seats were musts for me and I hate all the chrome so I went with the stealth. Still need to delete the one piece of chrome trim they inexplicably left on the exterior. I wanted the extra horse power of the 304 stealth performance package but really despise the 15in touch screen so I went with the 303.

If you aren't aware of transmission problems with the 10r80, definitely look into it before buying. There was an update to the transmission that I believe effects all 2023s forward and possibly some late 2022s.

I have a 19 Standard Platinum heavy tow. Absolutely must have is the 2nd row bench. Not having it would have severely impacted its utility in both hauling people and Gear. I haul HS tennis team kids, scout troop kids, family, dogs, gear! Etc. The 2nd row captains chairs basically would render the truck pointless just get a Highlander,Pilot or Explorer given they offer the same butts in seats as the Captains chair Expedition.

For me a big part of getting the Expedition was its towing capacity 9000lbs which we definitely use 2x a yr when moving our boat, it does a great job doing that. The real 4x4 and locking rear diff also important for some of our activities. I can’t go to the extra long due to city use but the Standard has been fantastic. Not going to lie we pack it to the max and run a ski box for overflow gear often.

The new 2025 split tailgate definitely a big deal for me given I had a landcruiser and know the advantages of that both structurally and gear/utility. Hope they still have that feature when I get another one.

The basic AWD Expedition value is in maximum people moving ability which case 2nd row bench and long version if thats your plan. Its basically Fords giant non-mini van - van.

If your active outdoor type and might or will tow? Just go full real deal heavy tow pack for the full truck equipment and capability

I have a 2002 and 2017 currently, and had a 2012. Love them all- the 2017 is a limited and has everything but the adaptive cruise, and auto dimming headlights- two features I definitely would love to have but weren’t deal breakers. Also all 3 had the keyless entry number pad, as well as our Edge- lifesaver and a deal breaker for us as we hate carrying keys:) they have all had heavy duty tow packages- necessity for a boat and a camper. The two older ones have had 5.4 V8 in them and the newer expedition has the V6 turbo- I was leary of it but it actually does great!

Top on my list, HD Tow, 4X4 with locking dif. But you have to tailor it for your needs.

If you tow, be sure to get the tow package as that will tow 9,000 pounds. Without it, only 6,000.

We purchased a pre-owned 2019 Limited in regular length. All-wheel drive, navigation system, and captain's chairs were must-haves for us. All other options were nice-to-haves.

We're going to get deep into opinions :) so here are my requirements for the last two Expeditions I purchased. None were negotiable.

1. 4x4
2. HD Tow
3. Bench 2d seat
4. 3d row seat (not sure if it's possible go get one without so this was easy)

We've had our 2019 Max Platinum for 3 years. Folks on the forum have heard me sing it's praises. I adore my vehicle. Everything about it...except the power running boards, they are a maintenance headache. They look swanky. But they are a pain. I have to use an air hose and grease them regularly. In the summer they are pretty consistent but winter, not so much. But that's it, everything else is marvelous. We have second row captains (I insisted on that for ease of access to the third row for the kids) we have the HD tow package. The interior is 1/3 tan, 2/3 (seats and everything from the dash down) black. My Taurus X was that way too. I like it. Brightens up the interior a bit. I would recommend the Max if you have more then 3 people in your family. The cargo area is pretty dinky on the regular expedition. And in a rear end collision that third row is further away from impact on the Max.

For me:
HD trailer tow,
eLSD
2nd row captains chairs
Cargo liner
CCD is beneficial if you get SPP. other than that the ride is quite stiff. I don’t have it, it does not come standard on the SPP. But I wish mine had it.
USB-C is only on the 24 model year.
My GSD dog just lies or sits right in between the captain chairs in the second row.
