Howdy, Short version, Had a 2005 Expy and loved it but didn't have a need for it, sold it for a cheaper car to drive around town. Have a nice Freestyle and am selling it and big (not trailerable) boat and looking to buy a trailer boat and a small travel trailer so I'm back in the market for another Expedition. Both the new boat and RV will weigh about 4k lbs dry weight each so I'll probably need about 7k lbs tow capacity. Expy with 8900 capacity should be just right. I'm here to learn the info to help make buying decision on which years, models, equipment etc. for smartest used truck purchase. Thanks , Bob in Florida

I can tell you my 2000 5.4 expedition had no issues towing my 20' yamaha jet boat before any modifications. It towed very well full of gear and family. Very comfortable and happy with how it performs towing.

Can't really speak about the later models since my experience is with a 1st gen. I would recommend 5.4 for towing if you do consider a first gen. Much stronger torque curve which makes all the difference when towing.
