I am a new owner of a 99 expy 5.4l with about 160k miles just to let you guys know. Anyway, heres my problems. #1- sounds like an exhaust tick and I know that there are a lot of threads on broken manifold bolts and all that, so I will have to get the steth out and dive into that later. #2-This is the one that gets me and I cant find a thread where anyone has figured it out. My truck feels like its binding when turning at low speeds and sometimes just going straight. It seems like its trying to shift into 4wd. A lot of people are blaming it on the transfer case and that ends up not being the problem. What I haven't heard anybody mention is the g200 ground. I saw that in a TSB dealing with the transfer case symptoms. Has anyone figured this problem out and where is the g200 ground located? I just picked this up last night and haven't had the chance to get a book yet. Also, is there any problems with pulling the 104 fuse (I think thats the one) and driving without it?

Hopefully I can be of service to you guys in the future, but for now I need some help!

Thanks Guys!

Welcome to the Forum & congrats on the new EXPY.

Not sure on the #2 you're describing. Mine definitely will do that when in 4/AWD Hi/Low depending on how tight you try to turn etc., but not during normal operations.

I'm sure others will chime in!!

I just bought mine and it does that too in 4WD. Usually just if I go from stop to a slow turn. When I straighten it out it does fine.

Im thinking mine has something to do with the brakes. I pulled the 104 fuse to the transfer case to narrow it down and it is still doing it. I finally drove it today and saw that the e-brake pedal was all the way down so I pulled the release lever and it stayed. I had to pull it up and it seemed like it wasn't even connected, no resistance at all. It also seems like it has a drive line vibration when stopped in gear. I turned the wheel while in the drive through and it started moaning at me as well. So im not sure if this is driveline, steering or brakes, or a combination. I havent really had time to crawl under there and look around yet, just seeing if anyone has had this issue. Like i said the transfer case should be ruled out now so back to the drawing board.

This is that TSB that I was talking about by the way. Im not sure if this would still be my problem now that I have that fuse pulled. Let me know what you guys think..

15749 AUTOMATIC 4X4 BINDING IN TURNS
SOME 1997-2002 EXPEDITION AND 1998-2002 NAVIGATOR VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 4WD MAY EXHIBIT MAY EXHIBIT A NOTCHY OR STICKING FEELING IN SLOW SPEED TURNS WITH NO EFFECT ON STEERING EFFORTS OR ASSIST WHILE IN THE AUTOMATIC 4X4 POSITION. THIS MAY BE DUE TO A POOR G200 GROUND. TO SERVICE, CHECK FOR CODES, AND CHECK FOR NORMAL TRANSFER CASE SPEED SENSOR AND 4X4 CLUTCH DUTY CYCLE READINGS. IF NO TROUBLE IS FOUND, CHECK THE G200 GROUND. A POOR GROUND WITH HIGH RESISTANCE CAN CAUSE THIS CONDITION IN TURNS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN AUTOMATIC 4-WHEEL DRIVE, DUE TO OTHER ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS THAT SHARE GROUND G200 SEEKING A GROUND THROUGH THE 4X4 SHIFT RELAYS AND THEN THROUGH THE TRANSFER CASE 4X4 ELECTRIC CLUTCH. THIS MAY ACTIVATE THE 4X4 CLUTCH AND CAUSE THIS STICKING FEELING IN TURNS.

I am just thinking, but what about the power steering? Check fluids and make sure it is working properly. Just a thought.

AS for the tick make sure it's not a plug ready to blow!!!
You'd need a wiring diagram, to find the G200 not sure where it is. thats the label #. Also piulling the fuse will not effect anything ( bad) , I'm sure some people here have done it.

Hopefully I'll be able to dive into it tomorrow. As for the plug issue, how would I know if its about to blow? Would a ticking be a symptom of that. The previous owner had a plug blow on him already and I really dont want that to happen to us. Is there any preventative measures i can take to keep this from happening? The tick sounds like its coming from the bottom end until you crawl under and then it keeps moving till I give up and go get a beer. I will go get a steth tomorrow, just hoping its just an exhaust leak and not a bad bearing. will a bad bearing trigger a check engine light from the knock sensor or anything? I have no lights on right now so im hoping for the best.

Thanks for that location on the g200 gharris, i will check it out.

I have a 2000 with the 5.4 and I get that tick noise upon cold start up and have found a busted exhaust manifold bolt on the passenger side...these were really cheap and cheezy bolts ford used...they are not easy to fix and expensive...I have a plan to cut my manifolds in pieces and then remove the studs....cutting the manifolds with a cutting wheel in pieces, I believe will relieve the tension off the studs and allow them to come out easy...fingers crossed...then a pair off long tube headers, off road Y-pipe with a 3" exhaust and muffler all the way out the back....just been building my piggy bank...can do all for about 700.00

well today didnt turn out like I planned as far as the weather goes. I did go and talk to the guys down at the ford truck dealership and they said that they are pretty sure that its the rear diff clutches hanging up. So I got a bottle of friction mod and went to napa and got a deal on some valvoline 75w140 and will change the fluid tomorrow, weather pending. I will let you guys know if it works. Anybody know about that spark plug issue? will changing the plugs keep them from blowing out? Why does it happen?

Friend of mine kept blowing plugs and it ended up being a head gasket. Took out the whole bottom end of the motor, so he ended up putting a brand new 5.4L in it. Hope it's not that...
