Hey guys,

I just bought a 05 king ranch with the 5.4 only thing wrong with it is that its 2wd but it was a steal so I bought it. I know nothing about Ford always been a GM guy and know one up and down. This thing is completely stock.

I want to step up a tire size over the 265/70 would a set of 305/65 fit stock?

I want to step up the performance do you prefer a handheld tuner or someone that does a custom tune? Ive seen where some people have modified their factory air box is that better than a cold air or just a cost saving? Any other mods on performance recommended?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

From what I've heard, about the biggest you can fit on stock rims and stock unlifted suspension is 285/65R17, possibly 285/70R17, without rubbing or perhaps a slight rub at full lock.

If you want a tune, check with these guys:

Opening up the air intake can help, but I'd say a custom air intake is best. I'm no fan of K&N filters, but others love them. It's down to preference I guess. Personally, I am considering to upgrade the air intake to the one used in the 3rd gen Expy, as it is a more open intake, and moves the filter out to the fender where it can stay cooler. This may not have an effect on yours if you live in a cold place, but I live in a tropical area and I measured my intake air temp to be up in the 50s in celsius, very hot. I am pretty sure that will drop a bit if the filter element itself can be located to a cooler area than on top of the engine, but it's more of an experiment on my part... :)

Thanks for the reply.
I live in Georgia so it rarely gets cold here, I have seen where some of the guys modified there intake think I'll stay away from that. I've considered a leveling kit but don't know if I want to mess with it. Definitely want the tune.

Most people go with a 3/2 leveling kit without much issues, there's threads here on the forum about that. Personally I don't like the 3/2 leveling kit. I don't like the look where the front wheel arch has visibly much more clearance than the rear wheel arch, so I'll rather keep the OEM stance and have equal arch clearance front and rear, so I'm considering a straight 2/2 lift.

Using the Gotts mod where you modify the intake isn't gonna harm anything, some say it gives them better engine response but I haven't tried it myself. The mods I'm considering for this is that 3rd gen air intake as mentioned and to replace the stock clutch driven radiator fan with 2 16" electric fans on a variable speed controller. Probably won't do much in terms of power, but should increase engine response and perhaps a slightly better fuel economy.

5startuning is where u need to go...swapping the intake can be done but u really wont see the numbers that are advertised unless u change the MAF senor and ECU by programming which is done with a programmer...5star makes the custom tunes for ur truck based on what u have done...plan to do...intake...exhaust...etc...several tunes and all custom

I'm not sure about the Expy but it should be very close if not the same. The Navi's came stock with 255/70 18s or 285/65 18s which are roughly an 32.5" tire. I have 305/45 22s on mine with no issues.
