Hello All
I just joined the forum yesterday and this is my first post. Yesterday I also picked up my first Expedition, which I know very little about.
Just bought a 2003 Eddie Bauer, 5.4L 4X4, with 88K miles, I bought it with a couple of issues that I need to get cleared up ASAP.

I have been perusing the site yesterday and today and I know the answers are here and I would greatly appreciate any help and advice any and all can offer!

I took it to a Ford dealership and had them run a computer diagnostics test to see how many issues there were. They told me that they thought it checked out pretty good except that the alternator was not putting out ample voltage or amperage to keep everything operating as it should. It threw a code or fault of some sort (don't know the code #) that would prevent it from passing the smog inspection conducted on all cars in Ca.

First objective is to replace alternator which looks fairly simple. My question is: How does unhooking the battery cables for a period of time, while changing out the alternator, affect the computer and it's memory etc.
I am afraid to unhook anything for fear of screwing up the computer and creating more problems than I now have. If someone could give me some advice or guidance on how to handle the electrical side of this repair I can handle the physical task of alternator replacement

Thank you in advance for any suggestion you have.

Thanks
