No hot air and the turbo fan kicks on in cool weather

It was cool enough tonight for me to rotate the temperature to warm and when that wasn't doing anything - I rotated it all the way into the red but still no heat. The A/C works just fine. I'm guessing this is also related to the thermostat telling the godawful loud radiator fan to kick on. It has been turning on when I'm driving around town in 60 degree weather. Poking around in the service manual there is something called an engine coolant temperature sensor. Only 86,000 miles.

Anybody wanna point me in the right direction? The thermostat looks like a PITA to get to - I watched an F150 video and the guy had to remove an amazing amount of hoses and stuff to get to where the thermostat was located.
