Want to see if anyone's familiar with this noise. 2005 XLT with 46K. Best way to describe noise is a one or two second delay after start up from cold in the morning, then a grinding or ratcheting sound for a second and a half and stops.
'Won't hear it again for the rest of the day. Transmission shifts smooth and it doesn't seem to affect anything. I know at this mileage, and I'm the second owner, transmission fluid/ filter hasn't been changed. So, I understand that there is a loose plastic plug down in the pan from the transmission dip stick, but this doesn't sound like that. I never heard that sound from my old '97 XLT with a 5.4. Truck's been great, but I'm a little concerned.

If it does it when it first starts before you move it, then I would say it's your fan clutch kicking in. Mine makes that same kind of sound when I first start it when it cold.

On start when the car has set overnight all the oil has drained back to the pan. This is caused by cheap oil filters , with cardboard antidrain back valves. Fram was noted for this.

Thanks, sgtowing, I'll run a stethescope to around that area and check it.
I hope not, JUST4FUN, I'm using a Napa Gold (Wix) and
also Motocraft. I haven't touched Frams for a long time and that's one of the reasons.
Thanks, and hope to hear more opinions.
