Bought a 98 XLT 4x4 5.4l with 210k miles, I've put on 7k in 3months sitting at 217k now, 2 oil changes, one alternator and battery. I live in SLO county and make a daily drive up a grade and back. The grade is short on one side cause it's at a higher elevation and the other side is really long and steep. When going uphill it runs strong 80mph uphill, sometimes with the ac on. but when going downhill coasting around 65-70mph it seems like it sucks down the gas, which doesn't make sense cause the rpms are low and I'm off the pedal. But if I speed up a little to 80mph downhill and keep my foot on the pedal it seems to help save on gas a little. It seems to really like 80mph at 2300rpms haha. But it runs strong I really don't feel any hiccups in idle. I'm pretty I already diagnosed this but in the mornings when cold it has a bit of a knock for a couple seconds till it then it runs like a sewing machine. Oil pressure is good I run 10w30 mixed with a little 5w30 cause it consumes oil so I put what I can get at the gas station in it. It's about a quart every 2 ish weeks maybe 3 on conservative driving. So that makes me think I need rings just want confirmation.
