still looking for the link I had a long time ago... basically you remove the cluster and have to re-solder the wire to the odometer

and yes you can leave it alone... unless you need to know the mileage every time..... mine is out but I haven't done anything to fix it... I do my oil changes based off of my trip odometer... just don't reset it until oil changes... and even thought the light goes out the mileage is still being kept track of...

Mine does the same exact thing, you're not the only one!

Common problems with Expeditions I've seen based off the forum and friends/family that have Expeditions (at least 1st gens) are:

Rear windshield wiper motor going bad
Child lock on doors locking automatically
Odometer not working or going on/off

i always get "really bert? child locks c'mon!" and then I have to let them out, its a minor inconvenience but not really worth fixing to me lol

This is a great thread, and thanks for posting those links... I gave them to the dealer where I bought the truck, and they actually followed those instructions to fix my odometer. One of the managers came out and told me they were all amazed at how accurate the instructions were on what to do and where to find the problem. Before I showed them this, they were going to order a new instrument cluster and reprogram the odometer display to show my miles. They were nice enough to want to do whatever it took to fix the problem for me for free, so it felt good to be able to help them fix it without spending so much of their profit on it. Plus, I didn't have to wait for them to order some part and reschedule an appointment. Thanks again!

although the op was about the electric odometer flashing in and out somebody else posted about child door lock problems as an equally frequent problem with expys. My son's expy had that same issue and a liberal dose of wd40 in the lock mechanism fixed it
