Hi guys,

The overhead compass/temp display decided to crap out on me, after 10 years of service. I was looking in my shop manuals, and noticed the only trip computer noted had the instant and avg. fuel economy settings. My trip computer only does outside temp and compass. So my question is... Can I replace my defective display unit with a junkyard one that does the instant and avg. fuel economy? Like am I already prewired for it? Anything I'll have to add? Can the unit come from any gen one Expie?

Thanks in advanced guys!!

OlBlue, whether you are wired for it or not is hard to say. There's a few variables in this. If you have a 2002 vehicle, you are more likely to be wired than if you have a 97. Also, if you have an XLT with most of the bells and whistles, then you are likely to have it where if you got more of a stripped down model, you may not.

The best advice that I can tell you is to pull the overhead computer down and look at the wiring going to the plug for the overhead computer. Count the number of wires. Now, go to the junk yard and look at the upgraded computer plug. If it has the same number of wires, then odds are you will be good. If you have a different number of wires (which is also normally associated with a different style plug), then you will have to upgrade a lot more than just the computer.

Ok. Thanks for the info bud. It's a top of the line XLT. of it had fog lights, heated seats, and vent rear windows, it'd be an Eddie Bauer edition.

I guess I could also check the wiring and see if I have any wires that go to the fuel system?
