so she’s going under the knife -

first up, phaser surgery.

dealer is solid, best local option, engine specialist is very decorated with this procedure - that said...

Q - for those of you who have done this already - or are more familiar with the fine points - what lessons have you learned post op, or particular details should i insist on with them (aside from the standard “replace all affected seals/gaskets, timing chain”)

anything else additional or extra i should do or push / beg for while he’s up in there?

any other tsb i should throw at them that could involve crossover labor?

TIA

PS they’re also replacing the front shocks & covering it under extended.... wondering if i bite the bullet & just buy front 5100’s instead so i don’t have to deal with it again? pretty sure i can get them to install them without charging labor -

Ask for an oil & coolant/antifreeze change. Metal and stuff will get into your oil & coolant when they are doing the phasers

I ordered bilstein 5100 front struts on Jan 5, 2021. Still waiting for them. Got the rear shocks 2 weeks ago. So if you don’t mind waiting 3-4 months for the front struts do it.

got her back today.

purrs like a sleeping lion. night & day difference. pulls harder & more responsive, which is probably a combo of the EB getting proper timing again & throttle reset my guess.

took about a week.

they replaced the water pump as well while they were in there, as a precaution - i flagged it over & over & reminded them that it’s covered under warranty if it fails so might as well do it now if you can see what you need to see to make that happen. & they did.

replaced the front two shocks under warranty, will replace them next go round (in god knows how few miles from now !)

NOTE: for those who are going to do the phaser.... when resetting the body down once complete, the tech screwed up & didn’t notice that he had pushed the gas nozzle down out of place. went to fill it up, & the 60iq gas attendant proceeded to fill up my left rear wheel with premium (because there was no downspout receiver, just a hole.) dealer promptly put me in a Yukon (yuck-on!) which gave me a great comparison that lasted all of a few hours before i insisted on a different vehicle. yes it was that bad, IMO. i would rather have a tempermental expy over one of those any day.

anyhow, my love hate relationship with this vehicle continues. what was that phrase... buy a ferrari & be prepared for the headaches? well this is my ferrari then, i’ll take it... the good is clearly worth the bad.
