It shifts well until it's time for the O/D to kick in. Once it gets up to cruising speed and cycles thru the gears it doesn't want t shift into O/D. It goes straight into neutral and the RPM's go skyrocketing. Was wondering if anyone knows if it's a solenoid, switch or a fuse issue. Maybe none of the above. Need help, it's being shipped to Alaska for my daughters commuter for college.

There is a list of "could be's" that will require more info such as mileage on the trans, fluid level and condition.

You will need to go through diagnostic procedure first, but I hate to be bearer of bad news, it sounds like your overdrive band inside trans is worn/burnt. What your describing is neutraling out, was very common on my Lincoln and mustang aod transmissions. You should if you know how test all other items first. Does trans fluid smell burnt? Is is brown in color? Or still light color without odor. Fluid tells a lot about transmission condition. Keep us posted.

The color is still good, doesn't smell burnt. The fluid was low when the problem occurred, so I topped it off when it was hot, hoping that would solve everything. But it's still doing it.

Really hope it's not the bands, don't really know anything about transmissions and the repair cost. Hopefully it doesn't cost an arm!

Thanks again and happy holidays!

Light pinkish with no odor? If there was an odor, can you describe it to me please?

It would smell burnt, kinda strong odor. Do you have a transmission shop in your area you trust? Have them or a mechanic that knows your transmission real well to diagnose symptoms. They can check solenoids, trans pressure, etc. is this problem recent or did it come on all at once?

Prologue: A couple of weeks before the problem happened I had the battery replaced

The problem:
The check engine light came on and when I checked the code P0705 (with my hand held code reader) it told me that there was a fault with the transmission range sensor. The car seemed to be running ok and so I did nothing (mistake!), although I ordered a new sensor.

(I should point out that I live in a small place called Dukhan in Qatar and getting to a repair shop is quite difficult, in my defence).

Then one day a week or two later the car started to shift out of gear when it reached OD and rev really high. I switched OD off and I was able to reach home (some of the shifting was a little erratic on the way).

I tried the car the following day to try to further diagnose the problem and it seemed back to normal. I used it for short journeys for a few more days until the shifting out of gear happened again like before.

The Transmission shop gave me 3 options of which I didn't want to hear:

1. For $400 a 50/50 chance that it's the O/D solenoid under the valve body- plus parts if it is the solenoid.

2. Dish out $1900 for a used trans and labor.

3. Purchase a new one for $3500.

Bonus option- the mechanic will buy it off of my hands? Never got the offer yet! Hahaha

Gravy,
What happened? I have the same problem with only 1st and 2nd gears - mine and has no damage to servos or Valve body (replaced OD servo)
I have 187K - fluid changed several times by the previous owner, fluid clean with small metal shavings on the ring magnet when I opened it last week. No error Codes present

Jim like the other poster stated this is a two year old thread. Start a new one or piggyback off a more recent one. Start a new post with your year, engine, trans, 2 or 4 wheel drive, and we'll try to help you diagnose your issue. Moose.
