Hello fellow Expeditioners! Just bought this tank about 2 months ago... 2001 with 145k miles, no service history unfortunately. Initially ran great with no problems, then about 3 weeks ago check engine light came on, no noticeable symptoms, and the fuse for the OBD port was blown so I put it on the "when I get time" list. I would call myself a somewhat skilled amateur, but most of my experience comes from suspension & cooling system work and little engine work.

Suddenly this past Saturday started running rough, here are symptoms and what symptoms I don't have.

-Idles just fine
-CEL is ON, constant.
-In park, after engine warms up, revving engine will occasionally run a little rough.
-While driving, accelerating runs ok with an occasional stutter, but when you get up to speed and vehicle shifts to cruising gear (rpm's drop from about 2.5k to 1.5k), a horrible shudder, louder exhaust, and occasioal blinking CEL as if misfiring (although the shudder / stuttering doesn't seem quite like misfires I've had in other vehicles, but I'm new to Expeditions). When this happens, letting off the accelerator alleviates the problem. Getting lightly back on the accelerator (so as not to downshift) will bring back these symptoms. If you get on the accelerator enough to downshift, runs ok until it shifts up again and rpm's drop.
-I was expecting some misfire codes, but only has P0171 and P0174 lean bank 1 & 2 (no other codes).
-I did new fuel filter, plugs, and wires when I bought the vehicle.
-Discovered a large exhaust leak in the muffler, about a 6" crack... don't think its related, but thought I'd mention it just in case.
-Cleaned MAF today, no change.

I have tried to check the vacuum hoses, etc., but I'm a little timid in that regard. I can say the hose to the PCV towards the passenger side looks new, but I can't quite get my hand back behind the elbow to feel around for a crack or wear. Other hoses I can get to to inspect are either new or appear ok. I could easily be missing a leak somewhere.

Ideas? After the flashing CEL I was really expecting a misfire code, so that has maybe thrown me off a little.

I have poked around the forum searching for similar issues, but most P0171/0174 seem to come with noticable idle symptoms...

Dragonfire, find the PCV hose and replace that (atleast check to make sure that the previous owner didn't think he got it on and now it is just hanging back there on something other than the proper spot). Odds are, what you are experiencing is that hose as ripped at where it joins the intake. This is a common problem with our trucks. Granted, with the age of the truck, I would also check the intake accordian just in front of the throttlebody of a leak there too. That can be causing you heartaches too.

Thanks for the reply... my thought was that it was a vacuum leak somewhere too. Tomorrow I'm going to dig in and check that pcv hose I couldn't get to before (was cold & dark after work). I'll post back with what I find out (or don't)
