Newbee here, not sure if this question came up before but is it possable to swap PI heads onto my non PI block. Would I have to swap the whole top of the PI engine onto my engine. If so would my engine harness/Ecu work with it. The truck has just over 100k miles on it and runs well it just lacks power as we all know. I'm looking at engine options in the near future due to the mileage. Should I just swap in a whole PI engine. I can't afford a newer truck right now so I'll have to spend some cash on what I've got already. Any ideas???

Heads and intake manifold are what you need. You may also need a tune, as the compression ratio goes very high, something like 10.5:1.

Your may want to consider gears. I've got 4.10s on street tires, really runs a lot better (even without the blower). These are heavy trucks.

Also make sure you have done all the routine maintenence...you should not be on your original plugs, fuel filter, or upstream oxygen sesors at that mileage, IMHO. Also make sure your EGR ports are clean, and you can also make sure your MAF is clean.

I bought the truck 3 years ago with 75K miles and I did a complete service on it. I change my oil every 5K miles with Mobil 1. I just did an oil change on it when I started it up I heard this God awefull poping noise from under the hood. It turned out to be the #3 spark plug on the right bank jumping out of its hole taking the coil with it. What the hell is that man. No damage was done except the broken ear of the coil which I secured with a large washer for now. Is this a common thing with these engines?

So if I put PI heads and intake on my block would my harness work on the PI intake. I'm assuming I'll have to use the PI injectors also. Is there a programmer out there that has the correct tune for this set up or would I have to get it custom done. 10.5:1 compression seems nice. I'll have to make sure to use premium fuel only. Lukily we still get 93 in Florida.

Hey pronstar do you have a thread of your build up? I would love to see it. I don't see much 97/98 Expy's modified to your extent.

Plug blowout. Not common percentage-wise, but there's a good number of thees trucks on the road and many have had this problem.

Do a time cert fix, I don't think you have to remove the head to fix #3.

Thanks for the link to my truck. I like her, but some new trucks (and most cars) are so fast these days I think I'm just keeping up with the Joneses with my 97.

Hey guys #3 popped out again taking all the threads with it while I was I75 the other day. I did the time-sert repair in my garage using hand tools and it worked well. Definately would need an air ratchet the next time though as it took me like 6 hours to do it. The kit costed like $385.00 and it its a very high quality kit. Still cheaper than pulling the head to repair the threads. I'm afraid to change the other plugs now in fair of damaging the threads.

Hi,
I know its been a while, But... If your still looking to do the PI conversion I may be able to help a bit. I installed the Lightning supercharger setup on mine. I have everything I pulled off my 99 Expedition. Intake, elbow, TB, injectors, intake tube, maf, airbox, cable bracket, alt bracket. etc. I also get alot of 2004- up 8 spark plug thread 4.6 heads, so no more plug blow out compared to the pre -04 3-4 thread heads. I can ofcourse supply the matching 11 valve cover bolt valve covers. 5.4,4.6 are the same PI type heads just different number of valve cover bolts.
If you want email me:

PS, CHANGE YOUR OTHER PLUGS!!! Let your engine cool overnight, remove the old ones install new with a small amount of antiseize on the threads. Torge should be 15-17 or 17-20 in.lbs. I dont remember exactly, I did mine by feel though. I changed my plugs when I did the blower and two were only hand tight!!!
