Hey guys,

I have a 1998 Eddie Bauer and plan on upgrading the radio to the Pioneer AVHP4300. Besides purchasing the DVD head unit what else do I need to do the install. I did purchase the relay so it can play while in motion, hah. Do I need a trim it, or install kit that does not come with the unit?

I have been trying to search on this forum and have read some info. Will some extra cutting be needed? Where can I get install/trim kit if needed?

What do you guys think about changing the speakers and sub. I have the premium mach sound system with 6 CD changer. The CD changer will no longer work, correct, or can it work in conjunction with new new Pioneer head unit? How can it be removed.

Thanks again so much guys. Also some recommendations of some speakers to get. I would be purchasing from Best Buy so any model #s would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

You will need an install kit and a wiring harness adapter. The adapter is so you don't have to hack up the factory harness. I don't know if first gens have steering wheel controls but if the do, then you will need that adapter as well to make them work.

I just put one of those in my 01 expy its awesome and I love it. You need to trim the top part of the radio cavity about 1/4" also you will need to sand down the very top edge of the bezel where it meets the top of the screen about 1/16" because it wont open/close correctly and finally I used the metra kit and I couldn't get the trim around the radio to work It looks fine with out it, and I was able to use the mount, so im not worried about it

Thanks guys. I have the bypass relay already, got it on ebay for $10.00. I will be picking up the head unit tonight. I ordered the dash kit from local stereo shop to pick up tomorrrow. I also left him a message about the wiring harness adapter and steering wheel controls.

What do you guys think about leaving the stock speakers or can you recommend something better from Best Buy? Same with the sub? How will these work out work out with the new head unit?

Thanks again.

I recommend you never buy car audio from best buy, its marked up like 200% You can use the stock speakers, the head unit doesn't have a very powerful amp in it, Its fine for the factory speakers. I had mine hooked up to a 175W Rms amp for like 4 months before I finally killed them, and I was beating the crap out of them when they died. i was listen to Rollin Remix by Dmx/Limp Bizkit

anyways check out http://www.sonicelectronix.com, they have some pretty decent deals on speakers. I like rockford fosgate/Kicker speaker personally

I picked up a trim kit wihcih looks to have just some plastic trim pieces. He also mentioned a Pioneer install kit which had some sort of metal box in it. This I do not need, correct? Thanks. Also any link to removing the 6 CD changer woud help. This will no longer work with the new head unit, correct?

I asked the same question to Crutchfield for a flip out dvd player I want to purchase from them and they said I would keep the stock amp as long as I hook the amp to the subwoofer out puts with the wires from the wire harness you use. Hope this helps.

I just installed a JVC 730 in my wife's unit on boxing day , and took about 2 hrs , I had got the premium harness adaptor , but all that was required was the normal one . All speaker wires are run off deck power , and the factory sub is off another , and in all reality can cut that connetor off as had to cut off a rca end and attach to the sub wires and use the Sub out off the deck. You cannot use a speaker wires to the sub as I first did, the sub amp requires a low level input , so for those in the other threads stating you need a convertor ? I would have to disagree. U jsut have to splice your RCA into the amp wires for the sub if you are using the factory deck.

One thing I have found is the sub performs alot better with the aftermarket deck because of the sub control on the deck, but I find the front end lacking on mid bass, had found them to sound better with the factory deck , So in the future I will be installing a 4 channel amp in the console to make them sound better once again. But overall I am much happier with this than the factory deck / setup , and can watch dvd's now instead of the old VHS :hahano:
