So is the "Premium" SYNC/Navigation sound system in these garbage, or have I just not figured out how to adjust it? I can set it to driver's seat, adjust fade, balance, bass, and treble, but the sound quality is horrible. People talking sounds like it's echoing from a tunnel, and music is missing most of its mid-tones and a lot of the sharp highs, almost like there's a "concert" setting you can't turn off. I see the equalizer, but can you adjust frequencies and ranges?

It's garbage. Within the next few months I am going to be replacing the headunit (probably with a Pioneer) to see if that makes a significant difference. If not, I'll just replace everything. On a side note, the Sony system in the Ford Escape is one of the best stock systems I've ever heard (I had an Escape as a loaner while my running board was being fixed). I don't know why they couldn't put a similar system in the Expedition.

garbage in all years...switching units wont be anything noticeable...best to upgrade the speakers with aftermarket and you will instantly hear a difference...put a 4-ch amp on them and it will sound even better

My biggest gripe was the volume difference between front and rear. I ended up swapping aftermarket speakers all around and it made a big difference in sound. I have the Sony system in my 250 and I think it sounds great.

In My Ford Touch, there's a setting for surround. Turn that crap off! Helps tremendously in my SHO.

As for my expy... took out basic sync in favor of Pioneer! Muuuucccchhhh better!

It's in the sound menu DSP > Stereo > Surround.

Thanks for the input everyone. I'd love to pull the system out of the 2004 Explorer I replaced with this Expy. That is the best factory system I've ever owned and had a good sub. Anyway, I turned the DSP to All seats from Driver's and there was some improvement. Unfortunately you cannot turn it off completely. Guess I'll make a full system upgrade a project for the future...

Just picked up a 2010 XLT with Premium Sound System. I am not happy with the sound. Not looking to upgrade to amps or specialized components. Just the speakers.

What sizes do I need, how many and where are they located. I haven't taken a detailed look at the audio system.

One option is to go to Crutchfield's website and provide the year and model of your Expy. You'll then see all the audio equipment that will fit your vehicle, along with reviews from others.

This. ^ I always showroom at Crutchfield and then buy elsewhere (usually Amazon) as Crutchfield is outrageously overpriced.

Another great factory set up from Ford is the Mach audio system in my 02 Taurus SES. The sound is incredible for a standard family sedan.

Yeah there's a sub back there. I actually had to check when I got the truck because it sounded so awful I thought: "No, there can't be a sub back there."

Stayed up until she got home. Doesn't sound like it has a subwoofer, and there is no screen in the back, all solid plastic. My VIN number search clearly stated "with premium sound".

If there is no sub is it prewired?

Otherwise Ill just get upgraded speakers for the front and rear and see how it sounds, then worry about any further upgrades from there. I don't need perfection, just decent road music for my long drives between fishing holes.

The current head unit seems to send plenty of power to the speakers, to me it sounds like the speakers cant quite handle it and don't sound very good.

If I get to doing the project I will document. Right not Im debating if it even needs to be done.

If you have the Premium Sound package then you do have a subwoofer. However, the 2010 Expedition brochure indicates that the Premium Sound package wasn't even available as an option on the XLT.

Factory sub is fuse #38 btw. If it didn't come with a sub, you probably won't have a fuse in there.

k9, did you replace the factory sub? If so what did you put in there?

I am planning to replace everything from the headunit to the sub, but haven't done it yet. I was considering a JL Audio Stealthbox, but may end up with an MTX Thunderform for the price savings.

No subwoofer, I reached up there through the access panel and there is nothing below that removable panel but a big space.

VIN number search definitely says "with premium sound" , oh well. Maybe that is premium for the XLT.

Will(can)upgrading just the 4 speakers make a big difference without a sub to upgrade?

Is the sub prewired? probably not, I didn't feel any wires.

Thanks

Premium Sound package has 7 speakers, so between that and lack of a sub, rest assured you have the standard package. No loss as the premium sound sucks anyway. I would replace the speakers and headunit. If you just replace the speakers, there will be an improvement but it's still going to be limited by the poor output of the headunit. I don't think a sub is a necessity at all unless you listen to a lot of bass-heavy music. That's last on my list of things to replace.
