Been shopping for these for a few weeks. Finally closed the deal on a 2010 XLT with leather, 4wd.

First thing I do with almost all of my vehicles is upgrade the stock speakers (unless it comes with a premium sound system). This one has the basic system that comes in all of the XLT's. I don't think it has Sync.

How are the factory front door speakers wired? I see a door speaker and a tweeter on the door. Are these in parallel with a cap for the tweeter? Any suggestions on a component speaker kit to replace them? Factory looks like 6x8... not many component options out there.

I would have preferred a limited or eddie bauer, but the truck I bought was too good to pass up. price good, low mileage, it was obviously garaged and no rust. The main feature I'm missing is auto climate control. How difficult would it be to swap in some junkyard parts from an expedition with auto control? This is not a must-do but if its relatively easy I might do it.

also... anyone near NC want a brand new set of uniroyal laredo 265/70/17's. Dealer put new ones on there and I am going with some different tires. They have less than 100 miles, i'll sell them cheap

The front speakers are a "component" setup but it's a self contained enclosure that comes out. I didn't bother to disassemble. Full range signal goes to each location so you can use whatever you want and I imagine it is a simple setup inside the speaker enclosure w just a cap to block bass freq. You'll have to get creative though if you want to mount something in that location.

The 6x8 has an available adapter plate to go to 6.5" so a traditional component setup is easy to obtain, finding a place for the tweeter will require some modification. I was going to do this but time constraints made me choose otherwise, I'll likely revisit this after the holidays when I have some time off again. I was looking into the Kicker QS 6.5 components and planned to install either in the A pillar if room allowed or higher up on the door. There is quite a bit of depth available so woofer choice shouldn't be limited much, if any.

I ended up w 6x8 JBL GX series coaxials running on an alpine ktp445 amp. The amp sits behind my hvac controls inside the dash. Works great, easy to install. The setup is noticeably more clear than stock, slightly improved bass without relying on the sub as much. The biggest change is you can listen at virtually any volume that isn't painful with essentially no distortion. Great for windows down on the hwy.

Nice write up there. Looks very doable. That one will be a bit down the road for me, nice to know its possible.

Any reason you went with 6x8 as opposed to a component setup? Did you keep the stock tweeters?

My last car (highlander) had 6x8's in the doors and I stayed with that size because I wanted the extra bass and did not plan on a sub. That was actually a great setup with a lot of bass. However the expedition has plenty of room for a compact sub so I think I might be open to 6.5 components.

I had a 2011 F150 for awhile (no tweeters) and did not like having only door speakers.

What size head unit is a good fit on these? Would like to get something with carplay.

Input your vehicle details and they will show what the factory installed components look like and how to replace them and what fits. Price is very competitive since they include adapters and wiring harnesses. They even have all the modules to make your steering controls work with aftermarket head units. No brainer unless you are looking for a completely custom system with upgraded wiring.

Crutchfield did have a nice article on speaker replacement.

I just bought some JBL GTO860C component 6x8 speakers on ebay for $265 shipped. I recently put a 6.5" JBL component kit in my old IDI F-250. I think I will like the 6x8's. Crutchfield has them for $380. I like crutchfield but always shop around. I don't mind cutting the factory wiring harness at the speakers, its only two wires.

+1 for Crutchfield. Made my wife's explorer much easier to swap head unit on.

If you're going to the junk yards, I'd try to find a limited you can pull from. Honestly I'm pretty impressed with the stereo in mine, though I'm getting older :)

The Eddie Bauers and Limiteds had the rear sub-woofer and its amp in the rear quarter panel. there's no harness for that in the XLT.

In my Escape I put Infinity 682.11cf in all 4 doors, it’s a perfect fit for 6x8. While they aren’t component speakers, they do work very well.

I didn't go with the component as I simply didnt have time to mess with it. The factory tweeters aren't a separate thing and come out with the woofer, it's in a self contained enclosure. We had a 3 week old baby at the time and I probably shouldn't have spent the time I did on it. I'll likely get to it in the coming months. I'm able to buy through work at a substantial discount so these 6x8s weren't much.

Not a fan of the Sony XAVAX series. They are a good value for what you get but the interface is one of my least favorite as well as the look of the controls.

Check out the Alpine ILX-W650. I'm likely putting this in what will be my new daily commuter due to changing work locations soon. It's a very compact unit with a great screen and decent features for the price point. If you're looking to employ an amp which I'm guessing do to the GTO's and not get crazy they make the KTA-450 that bolts right to the back of it for a very clean install with about triple the RMS the 650 puts out on it's own.

Something I discovered buying car speakers is the SPL/sensitivity rating. This is basically the amount of sound it puts out at 1 watt. Look for 92spl or higher. I replaced my 6x8 Mustang rear shelf speakers. I used Blaupunkt, 2-ways(very nice upgrade). I added only 1" tweeters, under the factory door panels. It already had a 2-way 6x8 and 8" Shaker subs, in the doors. I bought a Sound Ordinance powered sub, from Crutchfield. It's one of the best sounding systems, I have owned.

Good advice. I did the same. The JBL GX8628 I put in are 92db sensitivity. Infinity also offers upgraded version of those with a superior woofer, the 86CFX, which is 94db and 2.5ohm impedance. Either work well even on a factory radio though really shine with a modest amp.
