i have a 2007 expedition with the 20" chrome clad wheels, does anyone know if i can have these powdercoated?? the chrome is pealing on the edges and i was thinking of making them black.

Have the wheels media blasted and there should be no problems with powdercoating. Just ask around and see who is recommended in your area.

Media can be anything from glass particles to plastic, they use it the pulverize the surface of the metal instead of sand. A good powdercoater should have a cabinet to strip metal so you can get everything done in one stop.

When my grandpa powder coated all of the parts for restoring his tractor, he took them to a guy in town and he did everything. It would probably cheaper to find someone local than to ship the wheels to have them done.

If you can meet the guy face to face to see his shop, you can tell alot just by doing that. Also ask him if he has any previous work that you could take a look at to see the quality. A good price for dropping the wheels off (with tires still on) and picking everything up ready to put back on your vehicle is $300-$400. If you need new tires that could save you a couple bucks since the shop won't have to deal with them.

Can plastic be powdercoated? I believe the chrome-clad wheels have a plastic cover that has the chrome finish, so it probably won't hold a good charge when the powder is applied.

you can't powdercoat them. They are plastic coated chrome applique's on the wheel.

I'm a professional powdercoater and thats why I didn't coat mine.

thanks everyone, i had a feeling it couldn't be done. looked it up on the website for the powdercoater by me and it said the metal has to be able to take temps up to 400 degrees. since these wheels are plastic, it ain't happening. damn shame ford cheapped out on the wheels. that's really my only gripe with the truck.

I think you need to do a little bit more looking into this. The OP said that he has the factory 20" wheel option in chrome. I am pretty sure that those are real wheels and not the plastic covered ones like the 17's and 18's are. I may be wrong, but it is worth a "double check".

You might be able to separate the 'chrome' plastic covers from the aluminum wheels.
I'm pretty sure they are just held on with an adhesive. I don't want to tell you to start prying, but maybe there is a way. Perhaps heat the wheels to melt the glue?

If you can get the covers off, I'm pretty sure you can media blast and powdercoat then.

Of course, I have never seen the covers removed, but someone has to be first, right?
